DINNER WITH JAMES

A taste of Italy in our own ‘Little Venice’ VIVA ITALIA

With its central flowing river and honey-coloured stone bridges, it’s no wonder Bourton-on-the-Water has earned its nickname as the ‘Little Venice of the Cotswolds’. So when we heard that Donna Holland and Simon Bird, owners of the award- winning Chester House Hotel, had brought a flavour of Italy to hungry diners with L’Anatra Italian Kitchen it made perfect, tasty sense to us. Residing within the hotel, and 18 months in the making, the new menu has been created by head chef Mihaita Samoila using authentic ingredients and traditional Italian cooking methods. Expect sunshine classics such as caprese salad, calzones, pizzas and homemade tiramisu. For bookings, call them on 01451 820286. ✱ www.chesterhousehotel.com/italian-kitchen

Saturday Kitchen host and celeb chef James Martin is heading to Cheltenham’s Ellenborough Park on 20 July to host a one-off Gold Ticket charity dinner. Kicking off the evening with a Champagne and canapé reception, guests can then tuck into a summer menu devised by executive head chef David Kelman, featuring the likes of beetroot-cured sea trout, roast fillet of Hereford Cross beef with wild mushroom and rib meat ravioli and wild strawberry parfait. Post dinner, with waistbands and purse strings loosened, an auction to raise money for the Gloucestershire Community Foundation and Cruse Bereavement Care will take place. Speaking about the event, James said: “The menu looks mouthwatering, and anyone with a passion for excellent food and beautiful surroundings should not miss out.” Tickets are selling fast and cost £125 per person. HUNGRY TRAVELLER

Nailsworth: home of a handsome Herbert or two

Grape expectations

With the prawn Caesar salad (p22)… A lightly oaked white is my usual Caesar-salad partner, but I think the prawn twist calls for a vibrant dry rosé. Saint André de Figuière ‘Le Saint Andre’ Rosé 2012 is a classic Provençal pink (£9.90) with delicate aromas of red apples and wild strawberries that will work well with the prawns, and a crisp dry palate that will cope with the ham and dressing.

This summer Stroud’s Personal Best Studio is yet again joining forces with three Nailsworth restaurants to host a ‘safari supper’ evening. Wild Garlic, Hobbs Bistro and Mark@Street will all take part, with proceeds going to local Gloucestershire hospice, Cotswold Care. Instead of spotting leaping gazelles, get your binoculars out to spy on the chefs as they whip up a storm in their own natural habitat as you move from one kitchen to the next, sampling each course along the way. The next kitchen safari will take place on 9 July and tickets are priced at £32.50 per person. Last year the culinary adventures raised over £1,500 and, with only 28 tickets available per night, booking is advised. Email info@personalbeststudio.co.uk. ✱ personalbeststudio.co.uk

MatchmakerANNA ASTIN returns with recommendations for three great wines to try with our recipes, from page 22 onwards…

With the raspberry, lime and coconut cake (p30)… Opt for a rich, medium sweet Gewurztraminer from Alsace, or even the New World, with this. With classic flavours of rose petals and lychees, this variety will complement the far-eastern inspired lime and coconut elements of the cake perfectly. The Kientzheim-Kayserburg Gewürztraminer 2010 (£12.50) will do.

With the grilled courgette salad (p52)… A light, refreshing Italian white is my choice here, but rather than reaching for the Pinot Grigio, try something a little different. The impressive Poggio al Toscanna Solosole Vermentino 2010 (£16.00) from Italy’s north east has a wonderful elegance and distinctive herbal floral notes that will enhance the fennel and sorrel beautifully.

All of these wines can be bought at Vinotopia in Long Newnton, near Tetbury, and online at www.vinotopiawine.co.uk 10 crumbsmag.com
