Comment in response to the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry call for tube upgrades in the Comprehensive Spending Review (7 June 2013)
agree with LCCI chief executive Colin Stanbridge and his ‘Grow London – Tell George’ campaign. We need to modernise some of the oldest parts of the London Underground. If we don’t, our capital will suffer delays due to signal failures and faulty trains.
That is no surprise - the equipment on the Piccadilly line, for example, has been around for almost 40 years – over quarter of the total amount of time since the first journey between Paddington and Farringdon on the Metropolitan Railway in 1863.
The London Underground is the artery which keeps the capital’s economy alive. We need to modernise it and keep
London moving. Failure to do so will have an impact on London’s and the UK’s economic performance. TfL is asking for £1.8 billion per annum in the Comprehensive Spending Review to ensure this does not happen. It is an economic no-brainer. The Piccadilly line modernisation is a shovel ready scheme which will pay for itself in 10 years based on current population growth predictions.
