Feature Materials handling & conveyors Bespoke handling for cable specialist

A leading provider of specialist high performance subsea cables and umbilical systems has turned to Briggs Equipment for a bespoke handling solution when it needed a diverse range of materials handling equipment

J

DR Cables Systems, winner of Queens Award for Enterprise, has been supplied with a mixed fleet of 12 machines including four

Yale VX25 diesel counterbalance trucks and a series of other equipment ranging from five tonnes to 40 tonnes. The equipment has been supplied across JDR’s site in Hartlepool and its headquarters in Littleport, Cambridgeshire to help deliver prod- ucts throughout the offshore oil, gas and renewables market.

Richard Dade, central region sales executive for Briggs Equipment says: “JDR’s operation is extremely complex because each product is manufactured

bespoke. It was vital that we supply the right number of trucks to cover a wide range of handling operations as well as keeping costs low.”

Briggs has supplied the fleet on a long term flexible hours contract which consists of six month intervals to review the usage of the equipment. “JDR needed the flexibility to use machines more or less than the con- tract’s planned hours. Variation would then be charged or credited to the next six-month period. A fixed scale of charges means that there is trans- parency and confidence in the fairness of charges,” Dade continues. collision impact sensors have also been fitted to the majority of the machines which automatically shut the trucks down on impact and can only be restarted by a supervisor. In addition, these machines also include key pad operator access to help moni- tor driver behaviour.

Energy efficient non-contact accumulation conveyor C

onveyor Systems launched its new energy efficient 24V non-contact accumulation conveyor (Zero Line Pressure/ZLP) at IMHX 2013. The new 24V Motorised Roller

(Zero Line Pressure) conveyor is designed to handle most regular shaped products, but is ideally suited for providing smooth transfer of fragile, irregular shaped or high value goods, singulating and accumulating online to avoid product contact or line pressure. The conveyors are manufactured with either extruded low profile aluminium side frames or from mild steel construction. Individual product “zones” - normally one per product, are created along the length of the conveyor system, each driven by a 24V brushless motorised roller that is PLC controlled in conjunction with sensors located in each of the driven zones to monitor the path of the products along the conveyor. These conveyors offer maximum flexibility to handle varying throughput rates, unit sizes and traffic patterns, including ‘singulation’ or ‘train release’ (slugs of products) to support easy and safe removal of packages to/from the conveyor. As specific conveyor zones only run when there are containers on the line, this reduces energy consumption and noise, as well as wear and tear of components and therefore increases the conveyor system's operational life. Other customer specified features include load weight indicators which let the operators know how much weight the forks are lifting to help reduce CO2 emissions and tyre ware. These have also helped to minimise costs as well as improve safety and reduce damage.

“Briggs has really broken the mould in its services to provide an ideal solu- tion and we are equally impressed with the capabilities of Briggs’ engi- neers to maintain the whole of the mixed fleet,” comments Greg Brown, supply chain director at JDR. Dade adds: “Our relationship with JDR is going from strength to strength as we continue to support them through their continued growth.” JDR’s total fleet includes four Yale VX25 counterbalance trucks, two Flexi narrow aisle electric trucks, a five-tonne and seven tonne counterbalance, one 16-tonne and 28-tonne reach stacker, a 40-tonne LPG counterbalance and a Genie MEWP with short-term hire machines on demand when needed.
