Event promotes careers in logistics Comment

Briggs Equipment, based in Cannock, has been helping to encourage students to think about a career in the logistics industry during an event at the University of Derby.

Briggs put on a display featur- ing state-of-the-art trucks and equipment as part of the univer- sity’s Logistics Week.

A counterbalance truck was driven into the main atrium at the Kedleston Road campus to sit alongside other materials han- dling equipment including pallet trucks. Students could also meet members of the Briggs team to talk about opportunities in the materials handling side of the

logistics industry. Dean Mansell, national aftersales manager at Briggs Equipment and board member of the National Skills Academy Logistics, explained: “It was great to meet so many bright young students and to tell them about the wide range of careers available in our sector. “It was also good to network with other businesses involved in logistics and to hear the views of industry experts.”

Sponsored by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), the event also gave companies the chance to see how the university can work with them to develop skills.

Professor Liz Barnes, University

Pro Vice-Chancellor, commented: “Businesses and the university need to work together to ensure the logistics industry enjoys the high profile it deserves.” www.briggsequipment.co.uk

Flexi expands production facility

Flexi Narrow Aisle has under- taken a major expansion of its UK production facility. Production space and output capacity at the site in Tipton has increased by nearly 50 per cent. The 2.5 acre site now provides over 50,000ft2 of factory space. MD, Peter Wooldridge, com- mented: “We have invested a siz- able sum in our plant. In addition to the factory extension, we have upgraded our spare parts store and invested in our finished goods dis- patch area and our offices, particu- larly our IT facilities. “We believe the investment is a clear statement of intent and

underscores our confidence in the future development of our Flexi range of articulated forklift trucks. “Our commitment to Tipton means we can continue to offer local skilled jobs to existing staff. The Black Country is a great place to do business. The local availability of skilled engineering personnel has allowed us to employ a significant number of new staff, including five appren- tices, during the last 12 months.” The additional capacity will allow Flexi Narrow Aisle to increase output of its Flexi range of articulated forklift trucks. www.flexi.co.uk

One of the premier events in the materials handling and logistics industry, IMHX 2013 was hailed a

major success when it took place in March attracting the highest number of exhibitors and also a record number of visitors at 19,526. The impressive exhibitor stands and displays were a highlight of the show and many exhibitors I spoke to were extremely happy with the number of visitors and leads they generated. Many new products were launched

which we are featuring either in these pages or on our website. The record-breaking figures for

IMHX 2013 are a sign that this industry is buoyant and the future is optimistic. This bodes well for IMHX 2016 which moves to an autumn slot and will be held on 13-16 September.
