THE KNOCKOUT PUNCH:
Eric Therrien has been a Montreal fan-favourite for over a decade, playing marquee events like Bal en Blanc, Resolution, and Sensation QC amidst weekly appearances on the city’s most important dance floors like Red Lite, Beach Club and Circus HD, where he holds a residency and has recently been promoted to General Marketing Manager. Uppercut describes his style as “progressive house with a touch of underground music in afterhours and nightclubs”. We caught up with Eric to congratulate him on the new role at Circus, and see what he’s up to in 2013.
Who are some artists that inspire your music; where else do you find inspiration?
No artists have inspired my music, even if many of them are very talented and professional. I play what I really like and vary my playlist depending the party crowd’s mood. I had the oppor- tunity to play with many great DJs such as Markus Schulz, Roger Sanchez, Robbie Rivera, Blank + Jones, The Cube Guys, Anna Paula, Above & Beyond, Sydney Blu, Menno De Jong, Cosmic Gate, David Guetta, Hed Kandi, Kyau & Albert, Rank-1, Offer Nissim, Max Graham, Tiesto and Sébastien Léger. Playing closely with them didn’t influence my musical style but it helped me to work differently.
How did you start DJ’ing? How did you get into producing music?
I started DJ’ing at the age of 17 in a little bar in my neighborhood where I was mixing rock and dance music. I enjoyed the nightlife because at a very young age I was touring with my father-in-law that was drumming in clubs. I started to produce music in 2003. After being a DJ resident at the MP3, Montreal afterhours for more than three years, I decided to create my own music because I wanted to move forward in the music world. That year, I released over 100 tracks on Beatport.
Tell us about your new role at Circus HD.
Three weeks ago, I was promoted to the General Marketing Manager position and became responsible for local and international bookings. I am thrilled about this new opportunity because last year, Circus Afterhours was ranked in DJ MAG’s Top 100 world club chart at a stun- ning #19 position.
What are your plans this summer?
This summer, many big names are coming to Circus Afterhours: Khomha, David Tort, Richard Durand, Ben Gold and many others. Regarding my DJ career, I will play once a month at Circus with my partner Etienne Ozborne, and once a month at the Beach Club of Pointe-Calumet. I am also negotiating other bookings.
You are one of Montreal’s favourite DJs … what makes the Montreal scene so special?
Thank you. I think Montreal is a very important place in the world for house and trance music. Over a dozen international DJs are playing here every weekend. Also, there are so many great events happening in Montreal. We have many nightlife fans that just enjoy listening to music more than going out.
Where are some of the places you’ve been able to play outside Montreal?
I had the opportunity to play in many great locations such as Las Vegas, Mexico, Colombia, Turks & Caicos Islands, but the best crowd ever is in Montreal. Anything else you want to share with your fans and our readers?
Just to say thank you for your continued support of DJ Uppercut and Circus HD. To conclude, I would like to thank my sponsor, Rush Couture Clothing, which has been supporting me for nearly a year now.
