Your track Bloom was a huge hit a few months ago. What can you tell us about your most recent track Aldo? Would you say its headed in the same direction?
Nick: We hope it will be a pretty big track because we love the melody of it. The main thing is to see everyone’s faces when we play it live. That’s very exciting for us.
This next question is for Nick. How have you incorporated your knowledge of live band instruments into your productions?
Well, knowing keys and chords have obviously helped us to structure a specific melody. It helps us make a track more unique and we have actually started to incorporate guitar into some of our songs.
Naturally, you guys have artists who you look up to, such as Above & Be- yond and Armin van Buuren. Are there any non-dance music artists who have inspired any of your sounds lately?
Bruce: Oh totally! Guys like M83 and Bon Iver; we’re really into a lot of differ- ent stuff. It’s the variety of music we listen to that actually makes our sound so unique.
How did it feel to be featured on TATW and ASOT?
Nick: When we first got on there we were all giggly thinking, ‘No way, we’re play- ing live on the radio!’ But you kind of get use to hearing yourself. Once you hear, ‘You’re record of the week for the third week in a row,’ it just becomes awesome and naturally we freak out in a good way.
Considering the rise of your success buzzing everywhere, do you see yourselves headlining any major events within the next year or so?
Nick: That’s the goal, definitely! We’re doing a few club gigs that we’re headlining and we’re really trying to get our name out there. So we’ll see what happens.
Nick, you started off spinning hip-hop on vinyl. How was your transition to electronic dance music?
It was pretty simple because when I first picked up a dance record, I wanted to try and mix them together. Mixing dance music and being able to play with all the stuff for over a minute was just so fun to me.
Nick, how do you compare spinning on vinyl to using a controller?
The switch from the vinyl to a DJ controller is very weird because you go from that to buttons. The feeling is not nearly the same. When you’re throwing on a vinyl you can literally feel the needle hit the record and it’s a great feeling.
If you weren’t producing and DJing, what would you be doing right now? Was there ever a different career path you saw yourselves taking before this?
Bruce: I was actually doing architecture before this.
Nick: I have no idea (laughs). Thank goodness I am doing this because otherwise, I have no idea where I would be. This is something I really do love.
As a fan of the music that’s entranced millions around the world, it’s always a treat to get on a personal level with the guys standing behind the decks. Once you listen (not just hear) their numerous melodic productions, you will understand why world-renowned producers Above & Beyond and prestigious label Anjunabeats is giving Norin & Rad full support. Be on the lookout for their next highly anticipated single, Bird is the Word as I’m sure it will be just as uplifting and melodic as Bloom and Aldo. With big things planned in 2013 and beyond, the Southern Californian natives are becoming more and more impossible to ignore.
