USA: East Coast Trio T D E O B F W

Just an hour west of Philadelphia, deep in rich countryside that was occupied 230 years ago by the British, are several attractions – from history trails to living museums to parks and gardens – that together add up to the perfect day trip from Philadelphia. Valley Forge is the home of the country’s leading Revolutionary War-themed national historic park. The star attraction is the encampment site of General Washington’s army during the winter of 1777-78. History buffs will also want to stop at Brandywine Battlefi eld, which saw the largest confl ict of the Revolutionary War. Narrated driving tours are available. The arts also fl ourish in the area, whether dance at the Brandywine Ballet, outdoor sculpture at the Abington Art Center, the lilting strings of the Kennett Symphony or the toe-tapping bluegrass of a celebrated folk music festival. everything from the paintings of Andrew Wyeth to the comedy of The Three Stooges. Longwood Gardens is a centre of horticultural excellence covering over 1050 colourful acres.

One of the USA’s most world- renowned country gardens combines the best of Italian, French and English horticultural traditions. For the more active, there’s a zip-line canopy tour in the summer and skiing in winter.

Close by, the King of Prussia Mall is

America’s largest retail shopping complex – combine with the bargain-rich Philadelphia Premium outlets, also in the same area.

TOURISM TALK

“The tri-partnership we formed last July is working very well. Whilst the three destinations offer a great

three-centre holiday, any are also a worthwhile addition to an east coast tour. We fully

appreciate that not every client will want to fi t in all three areas on the same visit, which is why we stress that any of the attractions and

activities in the region stand up as part of a multi-centre touring trip. We recently hosted a fam trip to the region, in conjunction with British Airways, and the invited operators had a wonderful opportunity to experience what a diverse region it is. Many were surprised that it has something to offer every client.” Greg Evans, UK Account Director for all three areas

Meet the Operator

With its many historical sights I thought Philly would be a destination suited mostly to older clients. But with its trendy bars, pubs, restaurants, clubs, and the way the city has set up its museums, it would defi nitely appeal to a younger market. After visiting, myself I feel there’s an opportunity to sell it to younger clients.

And Atlantic City?

Atlantic City is known for its casinos but there are certainly other things to do. It’s great to just stroll the boardwalk and there are several beaches in the area, which makes it a better destination in summer. You can do a bike ride along the promenade and there are some really good premium outlets. Also, the city has been boosted by some new hotels, such as the Revel, which suggests it wants to position itself as a slightly more high-end market.
