A Moth’s eye view of Napier’s Art Deco
THE ‘World Capital of Art Deco’, Napier, on the North Island’s east coast, Hawke’s Bay, is adding a vintage Tiger Moth aircraft tour of the city, joining the existing vintage car and bike tours. Following a devastating earthquake in 1931, the city was quickly rebuilt and has close to 200 Art Deco-style buildings – the largest concentration in the southern hemisphere – preserved today by the Art Deco Trust which organises the tours. The third weekend of every February
sees Napier’s Art Deco Weekend (next on Ferbruary 20-23 2014) when the Art Deco Trust welcomes some 35,000 people
to more than 200 events
including jazz concerts, vintage car parades, fashion shows, steam train rides and the Gatsby picnic. Newly re-opened in the city is the Art Deco- style Masonic Hotel.

LORD of the Rings and Hobbit fans can join a new Window into Workshop tour in the ‘Coolest Little Capital in the World’, Wellington, which offers visitors a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the Oscar-winning Weta Workshop where much of the creative work on the films was handled. The tour costs NZ$20. Wellington Rover Tours takes visitors on half- and full-day tours to local filming locations, including Window into Workshop, with some tours guided by an extra from one of the Lord of The Rings films.

And some NZ$24.5million will be spent in traditional markets such as the UK. “Tourism is a big part of the economy;
it’s critical to New Zealand and we’re starting to see some good results…this year has been strong.” Some of this extra funding will be spent in the UK, according to Tourism New Zealand’s Chief Executive Kevin Bowler. “We’ve tagged a bit more on the UK to realise the opportunities around the third premiere of The Hobbit movie in London later in 2014," added Bowler. International
visitor numbers are
already on the rise, he said. “In March we saw 15.8% growth out of

Clinch that New Zealand sale: It could just help clinch the sale if you let clients know that a World Economic Forum study has found New Zealanders to be the second friendliest country towards visitors in the world, after Iceland. Close tourist rival Australia came in at number 27, while the UK fared even worse, at number 55. Bottom was Bolivia.

the UK, helped by having the Barmy Army in town to watch the English cricket team. This reinforces the benefits that big sporting events offer New Zealand, and how important it is for us to maximise the Cricket World Cup and the FIFA U-21 Football World Cup in 2015. “In the long run we expect the UK to stabilise and increase to 200,000 a year," the Chief Executive said. “To
counter the relatively strong
economy in New Zealand, compared with its tourism source markets, there will be a focus on high-value visitors and older age groups with more time and more money." This month (May) sees a mega-fam with 150/200 agents, including those from the UK and USA. Added Bowler: “We hope they’ll send people back, enthused to sell New Zealand."
