USA: East Coast Trio

Philadelphia is also where the US fl ag was conceived and knitted by Betsy Ross – visitors can drop by her once-home on Arch Street and also stroll down Alfred’s Alley, said to be the oldest residential street in the US. For an interactive taste of the life and times of Philadelphia circa 1776, ‘The Tipplers Tour’, run by Historic Philadelphia Inc, is led by a character actor who plays the

role of an English Colonialist, sharing tales and the language of the time as stops are made at modern-day drinking holes. The fi nal stop is at the famous City Tavern, which dates back to 1773. Fast forward a couple of hundred years

and Rocky Balboa, in the shape of Sylvester Stallone, famously ended a victory run in the original Rocky movie (1976) by sprinting up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art (PMA). Today, hundreds of tourists do the same and then pause to have their picture taken by a statue of Rocky. The museum, on the grand Benjamin Franklin Parkway on the edge of downtown, has a superb collection of artworks by masters such as Picasso and Matisse. Nearby is the stunning Barnes Foundation, the largest – and at an estimated $25 billion probably most valuable – private collection

of art in the world. It fetaures a huge collection of Cezannes, Renoirs, Matisses and Picassos, amongst others. For Mark Meredith, Product Development Manager at Virgin Holidays, which now features both Philadelphia and Atlantic City, The Barnes Foundation was one of the highlights of a recent visit. “It’s a fabulous facility that will appeal to

anyone with the slightest interest in art. It’s a great place to see the works of renowned impressionist artists,” he said. Also on the Parkway, the Rodin Museum

reopens this summer featuring the greatest collection of sculptures outside of Paris by artist Auguste Rodin When it comes to a little retail therapy, Philadelphia competes with any US city, says Heidi Blades, General Manager, Premier Holidays. “With no sales tax on clothing and shoes, Philadelphia is a great place to do some holiday shopping. Aside from a great Macy’s, and the Gallery at Market East there’s the Philadelphia Premium Outlets, with more than 150 stores.”
