ay and Mother’s Day are here! There is no need for any woman to feel that it
doesn’t apply to her. The mothering instincts are not just part of those who bear or adopt children—but part of the basic qualities of being feminine.… Mothers are most often identifi ed with caretaking and nurturing. And who is to say that isn’t a part of every woman? Whether it be children or
aging parents or an idea, a project , a cause, there is an element of concern and selfl essness to all of these.... As cheerleaders, too, our mothering instincts come into focus. How often do we lend a listening ear or encourage someone to meet a physical, mental or spiritual test? How often do we share in those victory moments? Especially during the teen years mothers and daughters
may experience times of disagreement and angst. A sympathetic ear on the part of moms—and patience to hear a daughter’s point of view—can help dispel a confrontation. Respect for each other’s feelings and strong emotion/beliefs are essential to keeping the mother/ daughter close bond. (See p.24.) Mothers are also forgivers and ready to offer a second
chance to those who need it. Along with forgiving is the accompanying willingness to be hopeful. Don’t we all need to, not only extend it but be recipients of such positiveness? And speaking of being positive, as all women become concerned with “aging gracefully,” a zest for living a healthy lifestyle is vitally important. The tips on page 28 have been proven to make sure all of us meet the demands of older selves with confi dence.
On Mothers’ Day, therefore, whoever you are: CELEBRATE YOURSELF!
