stoop to lift bags, and avoiding bags jamming against the chute lip.” The Baggage Unloader is a simple but
extremely effi cient device for unloading arrival bags from a container on to a conveyor for separation to the arrival carousels, or for transfer. “It is really an extendable and moveable sliding table,” explains Dirk Fransen. “It is completely manual and the handler simply works his way down from the top of the container to the bottom, pulling bags on to the Baggage Unloader and sliding them over to the conveyor, emptying a ULD in two and a half minutes and completely eliminating the manual handling risks associated with such unloading.
“When we tested this equipment in

Heathrow, we unloaded two containers side by side. One was unloaded by two men working in the normal manual way, and the other by one man using the Unloader. He fi nished much faster than the other two and was not in the slightest bit tired.” If that doesn’t convince, there’s more to come. Another tool, the Baggage Manipulator, is a three-part extending conveyor with a reach of 2.5 metres that is positioned at the bottom of a chute and can be adjusted both horizontally and vertically to enable the operator to control a batch fl ow of baggage from the chute into a container, ULD or trailer, with the minimum of manual intervention. The fl ow of the bag and the position of the conveyor are controlled by a

joystick with a simple, three-axis control. When used in conjunction with early bag storage as part of a batch-building process, the loading capacity can reach 960 bags an hour.
BEUMER Innovation and Automation conducted a trial of the equipment at Heathrow airport last year to enable fi ne- tuning of the equipment. “We ran pilots for a few weeks with handlers who were used to working with baggage,” explains Dirk Fransen. “After all, we are only technical people and we wanted to get the opinion of people who would actually be using it. The feedback we received led us to change a few small items here and there, so now all the equipment is basically ready for implementation.”
Every flight begins here.
