APRIL 2013 GROUND HANDLING INTERNATIONAL

6TH

ASIAN GROUND HANDLING INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE 13

familiar locations, plus mock-ups for rôle play were all worthy of consideration. In particular, he said, management training should not be overlooked. Is Asia going green? Not much appears in the press but a trio of environmentalists brought updates to those present on the second day. Russ Simonson spoke about the work at Sea-Tac where enhanced efficiency has been derived from an ongoing ramp electrification project. GSE, ground power and fuel delivery had all benefited in this context, with reported savings of 40,000 tonnes of CO2

annually.

Dr Mark Watson from Cathay Pacific dilated on sustainability and what Cathay was doing in this area: work on both

ground and air emissions was ongoing. Of particular interest was the introduction of charging points at Hong Kong International. KLM’s Alexander Romar then spoke about GSE fleet management, mentioning that at Hong Kong some 90% of GSE was fossil fuel powered still, and of that, 78% was diesel- powered. Attending to infrastructure was important and he was delighted to report that there are now three JBT electric Commander loaders operating there. To wrap up the green session, Laurent Decoux of TLD spoke on the company’s new TaxiBot initiative and the avoidance of APU usage, mentioning, too, the benefits of fitting idling sensors

to GSE to cut down on fuel use. The panel discussed one of the main barriers to ramp electrification around the world (and not only in Asia): the lack of charging infrastructure. Not only is the physical space requirement for chargers a problem but there is also the lack of available power at the airports to power the charger units. This is a prime example of how many airports are designed and constructed without any prior consultation with handlers who are expected to operate effectively and efficiently, despite far from perfect working arrangements. So yes, green shoots are appearing – albeit rather slowly.
