company identify who exactly requires training : rather than having a tool for all, it’s ideal for weeding out those operatives who may be less than confident on certain aspects of the de-icing process. Because the tool gives feedback and scores, it’s very easy to single out those who may require some extra training.’’ It’s all a far cry from the early days, when de-icers were basic vehicles; with that in mind, it’s reassuring to know that the training tools are readily available, so that there really is no excuse for not utilising the real equipment to the full out on the ramp. Every year the quality of the tools increases, as does the reality and feel of the de-icing operation. And as Jeff points out, trainers are not sold in isolation but rather as a useful adjunct to the real thing.

Jerry Cronin is L-3 DPA’s Senior Director of Strategic Business Development. “Demand for simulators last year has been about even with 2011. That said, we believe 2013 will be a growing year as operators look for more efficiencies and reduction in ramp incidents to help improve their competitiveness.
“L-3 offers a range of simulation including de-icing, driving, pushback tow operations and airfield fire-fighting and rescue. Collectively these products enable airfield operator personnel to hone skills any time of the day, regardless of weather conditions, before going on duty with the equipment. The trainers present a realistic, but inexpensive and safe environment, for airfield operators to perform specialised techniques in normal or emergency situations they will encounter in actual operations.
“De-icing applications have been our best seller, but we are in the midst of discussions and contract negotiations on several large pushback deployments. The biggest news in our ramp business is that we are now associated with L-3 Link, one of the pioneers in aviation simulation and a world leader in commercial and military flight simulation. This allows us to present an L-3 offering which goes from the ramp to the flight deck.
“Our 2013 development efforts will see us coming out with multiple improvements and updates to our offerings. Probably the biggest item is our networked de-icing simulation. In April we are delivering the next generation

of updates to our de-icing software to GIMAS at Charles De Gaulle. This new update will enable the networking of four simulators in the same virtual environment working on the same aircraft. Trainees will be able to work as a team to practise de- icing the largest jets. ‘‘We definitely see this approach to training and skill sustainment growing in stature. Based upon our long experience in other business areas, such as driving, maritime and flight, we know that when businesses start to look seriously at economic and safety improvements, they realise the benefits to operations and the bottom line. There is always an acceptance curve associated with introducing simulation into a new area, and we see aviation ramp operations as being at the start of that curve. While these techniques are now well accepted for training pilots and truck drivers, it took a while for them to be accepted. We believe that highly realistic and cost-effective simulation- based training will better prepare ground service personnel to do their jobs, will result in cost savings, and make airlines, airports and ground service companies more competitive. That’s a good story for any business.”
