ASIAN GROUND HANDLING INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE 11 Philippines review A busy four days in Cebu was in store for those who signed up to the sixth Asian conference.


f delegates took away anything from this year’s Asian event it was that the Asian aviation sector continues to


differ from that of Europe or the US. This point was underlined by KPMG’s Robin Cartwright who, in highlighting the need for a more liberalised Asian marketplace, mentioned that without a catalyst such as the 96/67 EU Directive, for example, change could well be slow for the independents.


In Asia, he admitted that independent operators were very much reliant upon partners to gain a toehold. At last count, there were just seven handlers operating at multiple stations. It was, though, a growth market (the growth rate forecast to 2032 was put at 6.4%) and the low cost carriers were fuelling it. Indeed, this category accounts for some 50% of the Southern Asia market now – and South East Asia wasn’t far behind. India, he said, remained interesting: the country apes Western style handling but uncertain legislation was hamstringing


progress to an extent; moreover, Delhi and Mumbai still accounted for 40% of the market. In summary, Asia was clearly under-developed in terms of representation by non-Asian players. Lion Air’s Captain Daniel Putut Adi


reinforced what Robin Cartwright had said about low cost carriers, for his airline has seen a 17% passenger growth during 2012. Anxious to underline the quality of his operation, the speaker explained that handling was a mixture of in-house and outsourcing and that Lion Air took pains over ground handling details, like securing GSE on the ramp in bad weather and the application of special FOD sweeps. Gregg Gabison, who gave a paper on the little-discussed area of social media and its deployment as a business tool. A quick survey of the audience confirmed his belief that most present used some sort of


social media in their day-to-day working lives. Social media was changing the world and how we see it, he averred, and he outlined how this tool could be used to disseminate company information and important messages as well as provide a frank view from the bottom up of company workers’ morale and opinions. But as he noted, those at the top must be prepared to lose control. Interestingly, Gregg insisted that social media should not be managed by the IT department but should be a function of HR and marketing. From Facebook to facing up - to the


realities of handling. A debate on various topics, including cargo handling, SLAs and the airline/handler relationship, was chaired by BFS’s David Ambridge. Amongst the points discussed was the prominence of the Procurement Manager and not the Operations Manager in negotiating the SLA and whether handlers were airline partners or not.
