The 2014 FIFA WORLD CUP takes place across 12 cities in Brazil next year and you can be sure that football fans in the UK will soon be planning their visits. Following hot on its heels is the OLYMPIC GAMES which take place in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. Embratur, the Brazilian tourist board, expects an additional one million visitors for the World Cup alone. It’s no surprise then that there is signifi cant investment in new tourism infrastructure across the country, including new hotels, improved local transport and better air connections. “The 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil is a unique moment in time


for Brazil to reveal itself as a diverse and modern country,” says Embratur’s Marco Lomanto, “We aim to increase the technical knowledge of travel agents and operators to further stimulate tourism before, during and after the World Cup,” he adds.

Research by Embratur and the Ministry of Tourism shows that RIO DE JANEIRO remains the number one destination for UK visitors to Brazil, but Foz do Iguaçu and Parati have displaced São Paulo and Angra dos Reis as the next most popular. Key host cities for the World Cup, including Brasília, Curitiba and Belo Horizonte also experienced growth. It’s an encouraging develop- ment for tourism authorities, who hope World Cup visitors will be more evenly dispersed across the country.

Hotels & Resorts is building on its presence in Brazil with the opening of the 284-guestroom SHERATON DA BAHIA hotel in Salvador. It follows a


comprehensive refurbishment to the historic building. Other big chains have multiple properties under construction across the country, including some 55 Accor hotels across its various brands. Voyages of Discovery’s new ship, mv Voyager, is now operating a 14-night PORTRAIT OF THE AMAZON itinerary calling at Recife, Natal, Fortaleza, Santarem, Boca De Valeria and Manaus.
