CHANGING TIMES BY EMILY ASHWELL “There once was a time when my idea of a holiday was jumping on a plane, guide book in hand, ready for adventure. Those were the days! Today my idea of a holiday is no cooking, and – at times – no kids. One of the reasons why the all- inclusive resort has flourished in recent years is that it is so appealing to families with tired parents and energetic kids. There’s a huge variety of food, activities are usually well organised and enjoyable for children, and it’s all included in an up-front price. When I stayed at The Verandah Resort and Spa in Antigua we had babysitters on hand so we could enjoy a meal out as a couple, but likewise there were pools where we could splash about with the little ones. For older children the pirate ship climbing frame in the kids’ club was fantastic fun.”
foothold in the luxury sector. Suzanne Walford, Senior Product Manager at Carrier, said she thought negative perceptions of all-inclusives, such as buffet queues and mass-produced food, is changing.
“Carrier now regards all-inclusives as part of the luxury market, although we would choose the all-inclusive hotel carefully,” she said.
“In recent years the luxury all- inclusive option has become very appealing for clients who prefer to know their total bill in advance. The most impressive thing about a good all-inclusive is that you dine à la carte and enjoy a good selection of wines and spirits – Carlisle Bay or Jumby Bay in Antigua are examples.”
