BRUNEI
What’s new Airports: Brunei International
Airport’s major modernisation works, are due to be completed in 2014 and double its existing capacity. Royal Brunei Airlines fl ies from
London to Brunei via Dubai and on to Melbourne. The airline’s London and Melbourne time slots are being readjusted, with London’s morning departure altering to a more customer-friendly 17.50 and arrival time into Melbourne to 05.00. Hotels: Refurbishments to
Radisson Hotel Brunei Darussalam’s 142 rooms and suites are due to be complete by the middle of this year. A new boutique 55-room business property, Badiah Hotel, is set to open in BSB around the same time, while a 28-unit service apartment will also be unveiled by the end of 2013. Attractions: The tourist board is currently promoting four ‘new’ tourism products: diving, bird
watching, heritage trails and Islamic tourism. Several certifi ed diving companies now offer dive tours of Brunei’s rich and diverse waters, which are full of wrecks.
Tourism talk “Our ideal clients are travellers seeking peace, wholesome nature and a
cultural experience – those travellers who have been to or are interested in destinations like Botswana, New Caledonia or Dominica. They’ll love Brunei because it’s not overrun by tourists and still has an aura of mystery. Our overall tourism arrivals for last year were 225,073, up to November. In terms of UK visitors, total 2012 arrivals up to November were 10,734, a drop of 43% from 2011 (18,921). This was a result of cuts to Royal Brunei Airlines’ long-haul network and its short-haul routes within Asia.” Salinah Salleh, Brunei Tourism
“Brunei was a British protectorate for a long time, and before that once controlled much of Borneo. The history of the place is fascinating”
