sawmill near Wellington, Somerset. When the machine was acquired in 1974 it worked in conjunction with the partnership’s fleet of lorries – loading felled timber from estates and woodland in the locality as some of these snaps from the mid-seventies show. (note the position of the Reynolds Boughton winch).

In 1983 Peter Quinain quit the partnership to concentrate on cutting specimen logs of mainly oak and beech for air drying at his Dunkeswell facility. The material was then supplied to Chingford Reproductions in Waltham- stow, East London and Chingford’s other production

facility at nearby Colyton near Seaton where it was turned into bespoke quality furniture. Needless to say the LM840 stayed with Peter and was an essential part of the operation – loading and rolling the logs on the cutting deck, unloading incoming material and sorting the stock yard. “The LM840 was really key to our opera- tions particularly from the mid 80’s to the mid 2000’s due to the need for bespoke timber to support the popular trend for barn conversions – especially here in the south west of England,” says Peter.

And in all that time the machine has been a perfect part- ner and has proved to be highly reliable. Apart from an engine overhaul in the early 90’s the machine is pretty much as it was first supplied although time has taken its toll on the cab and some of the panel work. Equipped with a Volvo D50A 110 hp engine, the LM840 weighed in at 9600kgs and had a straight tipping load of 4200kg. Still sporting the larger wheels to the front this was a four x four variant and featured true parallel lift along with its unique quick coupler.
