Cycle to Work cash can now be spent on safety kit alone

Bike trade boosted by new HMRC confirmation on C2W  Vouchers now redeemable on just accessories

By Jonathon Harker

FRESH CLARIFICATION from HMRC governing the Cycle to Work scheme has confirmed that participants can now obtain ‘safety equipment and accessories’ without the need to include a bike in their request, from March 1st. The usual limit of £1,000 will apply to

‘safety equipment only’ packages, with a £100 minimum. The Government's Cycle to Work initiative has been widely regarded as a key driving force behind the cycle industry in recent years, as well as for encouraging commuters to get on bikes rather than in their cars.

Cycle to Work provider Cyclescheme will be

offering participants the opportunity to obtain ‘safety equipment only’ packages through its scheme as of March 1st 2013. Publicising the news to consumers must

surely now be a priority for the trade. "In a recent survey of Cyclescheme

participants it was revealed that nearly 80 per cent of people obtain a bike through the scheme only once," explained Cyclescheme director Daniel Gillborn. "Offering participants the chance to obtain

safety equipment only allows those 80 per cent to re-enter the scheme to obtain all the essential kit they need (or perhaps missed off on their original application) for their commute.

Trade gears up for Big Pedal

Bike dealers get behind school cycle competition

 Over 310,000 school pupils and 1,000 primary and secondary schools expected to saddle up

THIS YEAR’S Big Pedal competition – already in progress and finishing March 20th – is expecting to see over 1,000 UK primary and secondary schools take part. The nationwide cycle competition,

delivered by charity Sustrans and funded by cycle industry levy Bike Hub, aims to get more children, parents and teachers on their bikes in the virtual stage race. Prizes are available to be won by the schools pedalling furthest, from bike storage to cycle stunt displays. According to Sustrans stats, nearly half of

all children want to be able to get to school by bike but only four per cent actually do. The premise of the Big Pedal is to show children and parents how easy it is to get around on two wheels. Scottish bike dealer Belhaven Bikes is one

retailer that has got involved with the bike- boosting initiative, teaming up with local Dunbar Primary School and Grammar Schools. Belhaven told BikeBiz that it is offering free water bottles to the primary

class that pedals the most and free entry to a local skatepark in North Berwick. Belhaven Bikes is also offering hire bikes free of charge to parents and supporters of primary aged children participating. Belhaven said: “Even prior to the Bike Pedal

we've always loved having a close association with the schools and this year we've added in some other activities around the event.” Facilities at the schools in question are

improving for cycles, according to the retailer: “Our relatively new, Upper Primary building and part of the grounds. We are very lucky to have such a wide open space for the children to play in and the brilliant bike sheds.” Last year over 950 schools took part, from

Cornwall to the Highlands, Belfast to East Anglia. The combined efforts of children all over the country totalled an impressive 1,140,075 miles. Bike Hub’s Phillip Darnton said: “Riding a bike to school is something most children would love to do – so the Big Pedal is the perfect way to get started.”

Sustrans Chief Executive Malcolm

Shepherd added: “The average primary school journey is just 1.5 miles – the perfect distance to walk or cycle. Every year The Big Pedal helps tens of thousands of families

“Riding a bike to and from school is something most children would love to do - The Big Pedal is the first

step to getting started...” Phillip Darnton, Bike Hub

rediscover the fun and freedom of cycling to school, get fit and save money at the same time. Evidence shows how children that cycle to school regularly are more active and better learners.” www.bigpedal.org.uk

"Giving participants the tools to be able to cycle more frequently and confidently is an important message and one that safety equipment only packages will help reinforce. In turn, this will help to ensure participants have a safe, comfortable and enjoyable commute.

"Independent bicycle dealers stand to benefit too as the potential for repeat business, up selling and improved customer loyalty looks set to increase as customers return to stores looking to obtain safety equipment only packages worth up to £1,000."
