WITH THE CONTINUATION of a weak economy in Europe, 2013 is undoubtedly shaping up to be another year in which travel buyers need to make maximum use of their skills, knowledge and relationships. ITM recently issued a research report, Industry Outlook 2013, that helps highlight what buyers need to look out for this year. The research includes forecast data across the various sectors of the industry and has been designed to help members create their strategies. First, and what comes as no surprise, is that the volume of transactions is falling – this is a trend we saw clearly in 2012

INFORMATION IS POWER

with continued growth in the use of apart-hotels and serviced apartments. Car rental rates are likely to take different turns in different regions in 2013: in EMEA, they are set to jump sharply in France and drop in Italy; moderate increases of 2-3 per cent are expected in Germany, Russia and the UK. Cards will be the ultimate tools for procurement this year – a way of reconciling the booking to the charge, and preventing fraud and abuse because of their data capture and tracking. Near field communications, the technology that means smartphones can exchange information with other devices in close proximity, is another one to watch in 2013. Expense management is likely

and it is inevitable that organic change is very much needed due to advances in technology and changes in the economy. The travel management companies (TMCs) will need to look to find other means to replace this declining revenue. In the aviation sector, the International Civil Aviation Organisation predicts traffic increases in all regions and, with carriers exerting tight restraint on capacity, fares look certain to rise. Fare increases are expected in almost all markets across the globe, with forecasters predicting moderate increases in EMEA and in Asia- Pacific, but stronger growth in the Americas.

In the hotel sector, one trend is new properties, particularly in Asia-Pacific, in countries such as India. Closer to home, rates in London are expected to rise in 2013,

to escalate in popularity, too, as this is not just a method of employee reimbursement but a powerful data collection and amalgamation tool. It is clear we are already into another tough year, but buyers, when armed with the right information, have the expertise to cope with the challenges ahead. Information is power, and power is one thing we at ITM aim to bring to our members. ITM’s research was supported by TCG Consulting, who provided the forecast data.
