NEW DOHA AIRPORT SET TO OPEN IN APRIL

HAMAD INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT – until recently known as New Doha International airport – will finally open in April this year. The US$15.5 billion facility has been dogged by a series of delays, and missed its most recent opening date of December 12, 2012. But a statement from Qatar Airways confirmed that the Gulf airline and 11 other carriers will become the first passenger airlines to fly from the airport on April 1. A phased opening means Doha will have a dual-airport service until fully operational during the second half of this year, when it will handle up to 28 million passengers. Its handling capacity increases to 50 million after 2015.

BAXTER HOARE SNAPS UP TRADE FAIRS DIVISION

BAXTER HOARE TRAVEL has added to its events business by acquiring the UK trade fairs division of German tour operator Dertour.

The London-based TMC has been able to buy the division after Dertour, which is one of Germany’s biggest holiday companies, decided to exit the UK market at the end of 2012. The latest acquisition comes after Baxter Hoare purchased events specialist Pressplan Travel in 2011 and legal TMC Holborn Travel last year– both companies have now been integrated into Baxter Hoare. “The deal will see several of the Dertour trade fair personnel retained by Baxter Hoare and relocating into our London Bridge offices,” said the company in a statement. Managing director Adam White added: “Following the withdrawal of Dertour from

the UK in December, there was a fantastic opportunity for Baxter Hoare to take on the business of our main competitor in the area of travel management for trade fairs.

“The increased volume of business means we will be able to offer even better rates, more booking options and a wider choice of accommodation. Our services cover both the UK and international events and we arrange the travel, accommodation and hospitality for event organisers, exhibitors and delegates from all over the world.” Baxter Hoare already organises travel to more than 50 international trade fairs each year, including Dubai’s Arab Health exhibition, plastics- and-rubber show K2013 in Dusseldorf, and food fair Anuga in Cologne.

HOTEL PRICES RISING IN LATIN AMERICAN CITIES

LATIN AMERICAN CITIES have seen the biggest rises in hotel prices over the last year, according to figures from HRG. Cities such as Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo recorded rate increases of 19 and 16 per cent respectively in local currency, although UK corporate buyers were largely protected from these hikes due to exchange rates. Moscow continues to be the most expensive city for hotels with

an average room rate of £261.38 a night in 2012, although this was only up by 1 per cent on the previous year. The Russian capital has had the highest accommodation prices for nine consecutive years. The next most expensive cities for accomodation were Lagos,

New York, Hong Kong and Zurich. London was ranked in 17th place in the list of the top 55 cities around the world, with an average rate of £164.30, which was up by 5 per cent on 2011. Outside of London, there were also rate increases in Aberdeen, Liverpool and Belfast; but prices in Manchester and Edinburgh went down slightly. • See Databank, p18-23

■ Air Berlin is to axe over 900 jobs in the next two years as the airline looks to cut costs and improve its financial performance. The carrier wants to

save around Ð400 million by the end of 2014. Air Berlin said it would be expanding long-haul services from its hubs at Berlin and Dusseldorf, but reducing its fleet from 158 aircraft to 142 during the next two years.

GARUDA TO LAUNCH GATWICK FLIGHTS

GARUDA INDONESIA IS TO resume flights to and from the UK with a new non-stop service service to the Indonesian capital from the UK.

The move is a boost for Gatwick, which has been trying to attract more long-haul services to Far Eastern destinations. Garuda said it will start the six-times-per-week Gatwick- Jakarta service in the final quarter of 2013, but did not give a more specific date. The airline currently operates an Amsterdam-Jakarta service via Abu Dhabi. Gatwick chief executive Stewart Wingate said: “Despite being a crucial high-growth business market for the UK, Indonesia has been under-served, with no direct routes to the region from the UK – until now. Jakarta is also a major hub airport for south-east Asia, giving UK passengers even more access and choice to the region.”
