FEBRUARY 2013 GROUND HANDLING INTERNATIONAL JBT saw double digit growth in 2012
“The industry, it turns out, is changing power sources and it is going more green. We know that a lot of airports will become green airports, thus there will be no space for diesel-powered GSE. In this respect we have to get ready and the alternatives to diesel power should be in our product range. We expect the ratio of green to diesel will increase in the coming years.”
A US perspective
JBT AeroTech experienced double digit growth in terms of demand for its cargo loaders in 2012 when compared to the prior year, reckons Jim Cherrett, Manager Marketing Operations. “Sales were equally distributed
throughout the globe, to airlines and ground handling agencies. It is interesting to note that sales of main deck loaders were very upbeat, despite declining growth in the global air cargo sector.” With the introduction of the B787 composite bodied aircraft, a lot of interest has been generated by the JBT Aircraft Proximity Detection system, which is designed to assist loader operators in following safe and correct operating procedures. The APD system features a base system, which includes a PLC, radar and hand throttle control, all of which combine to provide safe driving speed during interface with the aircraft cargo door. Additional options that are integrated with the PLC include sensor- loaded handrails and front bumpers, wheel alignment and side sensors. According to Mike Melander, JBT’s Loader Product Engineering Manager, in discussions with customers it was found that there was no one-size-fits- all solution to reduce risk of aircraft damage. “Therefore we developed the APD system so that customers can select options and configure the system to meet their specific operations.” To date, JBT APD systems have been sold to customers in Europe, Latin America and North America. In addition, field kits are available on both Commander 15 and 30 loaders, as well as all the i-referenced models.
Sales for electric cargo loaders
received a boost when a major Hong Kong ground handler purchased its first Commander 15i electric loaders following thorough testing, which verified that the loader performed as specified. In addition, a European customer added another Commander 15i electric loader to its fleet and a large US air carrier converted several of its diesel-powered Commander 15 loaders to run on electric power.
Another facet of the cargo loader business where JBT is seeing increased growth is within the rebuild programme. The Commander’s modular, heavy duty structural design makes it an excellent candidate for rebuilding. During the past year, a steady stream of Commander 15 and Commander 30 loaders were rebuilt at JBT’s Orlando premises. JBT expects this trend to continue in 2013 as the early generation Commander 15s and 30s move into the 15-19 year old age bracket.
German update
Germany is also home to the hi-lift and Trepel is one of the big manufacturing names in the business. Looking back, Philippe de Soyres, the company’s Sales Manager, says that the loader market proved to be very robust in 2012, and that the period brought with it several very large orders. “We noticed a need to invest in new GSE after many years of being at a rather low investment level. We have mainly profited from a high demand for main deck loaders, a segment in which Trepel is especially dominant. “The major change has been that
Europe is again investing in GSE. Here, the catch-up after several years of low investment has been specially striking. Other areas in the world have been more constant over the last few years. “Most of our sales are of the 7 tonne
loader, the CHAMP 70. But this year the main deck loaders, the CHAMP 140 and
