Tytens says that, since certifi cation in 2004 and 2010 as an ATS and ISAGO member respectively, his key priority has always been matching international standards in service delivery as a ground handler. "Key to this is the ISAGO recertifi cation that takes place every two years and the commitment to procure modern GSE to meet the day-to-day challenges in ground handling. For instance, one of our major challenges at Entebbe International was the most dignifi ed way of embarking/disembarking PRMs. In response to this, we had to bring in new specialised equipment from Denge, the Isuzu NPR 75 model manufactured in 2010. The equipment has a capacity of three wheelchairs and has greatly improved on the boarding process."


The Middle East


Let’s begin with a little history. TAV Airports was awarded the operation of Monastır airport as well as the development and operation of the new Enfi dha-Hammamet airport in 2007. Enfi dha-Hammamet airport became operational in late 2009 and TAV has since facilitated the growth of airlines and tour operators’ business in both airports.


Despite its short history, the new airport has already become popular among airlines as the route network continuously expands. International non-stop fl ights from more than 30 destinations have been operating there in 2012, mainly in the summer season. Having established itself as an


international brand with its ever- increasing business volume and successful projects in the Middle East and North Africa, TAV Airports now serves around 451,000 fl ights and 53m passengers each year. handling unit of TAV Airports, and has extended its 79 years of ground handling knowledge to airlines at Enfi dha-Hammamet airport under the name of TAV Tunisie Ground Handling Services. Huseyin Bahadır Bedir is TAV Tunisie’s General Manager. “This was the third year of operation after the establishment of TAV Tunisie Ground Handling Services at Enfi dha- Hammamet International and every year, with the increase in the traffi c, we are handling new airlines. In the previous three years we reached agreements with more than 40 airlines including Nouvelair, the Thomas Cook Group, the TUI Group, Air Berlin, SAS, Transavia and Transaero,” he elaborates. TAV had to invest in GSE on an annual basis. In terms of environmentally– friendly GSE, some 70% of its baggage tractors are battery-powered and TAV’s policy is one of making further investments with this type of equipment wherever possible. Staff numbers have increased as the operation has grown and Huseyin says that he has never faced any problems when it comes to recruiting qualifi ed staff. For his training
