FEBRUARY 2013 GROUND HANDLING INTERNATIONAL
Amadeus Altéa DCS for ground handlers is a community platform developed by working closely with ground handlers that permits customers to take advantage of the combined ground handlers’ expertise and Amadeus technology. Using the technological capabilities of Altéa DCS’s Customer Management and Altéa DCS’s Flight Management services for airlines as a base, Amadeus’ specific solutions for ground handlers simplifies their interaction with an airline, regardless of whether their airline customer uses the Amadeus Altéa suite of products or not. “With Altéa DCS for ground handlers,
we remove all the complexity of pairing the ground handler’s system with the airline’s own specific business rules, permitting a seamless integration of the ground handler’s and the airline’s operations. This enhanced level of integration results in optimised use of the ground handler’s resources, while providing a higher quality service to their airline customers,” commented John Jarrell, Head of Airport IT, Amadeus. “We are very pleased with the rapid
acceptance of our solution by ground handlers and we hope to continue making it available to more ground handlers worldwide.”
Latin American group simplifies reservations
Latin American carrier LAN Cargo, along with its affiliates, recently launched an e-booking tool that will allow its customers to create and manage reservations online. This new service will initially be available for reservations originating in New York, Miami and Mexico, and the carrier says that the new tool is to be rolled out across several markets as 2013 unfolds. LAN Cargo’s subsidiaries, namely ABSA (in Brazil), MAS Air in Mexico and Linea Aerea Carguera in Colombia, will all be adopting this new tool although its not know whether the facility will be offered by TAM Linhas Aereas, LAN Airlines’ partner in the newly-created LATAM Airlines Group. LATAM member airlines will continue to operate under their current identities.

Munich airport: more user- friendly for 2013
Lufthansa has been making baggage check-in even simpler for its passengers. Starting late last year, at Munich airport, passengers have been able to check their bags in themselves. New baggage drop-off machines with easy-to-follow instructions guide passengers through the few steps needed to check in their bags. Six new-generation baggage machines are already in operation at the southern end of Terminal 2, and a further 13 were added at Munich by the end of 2012. At Frankfurt, two baggage drop-off machines are also undergoing a test run. By the middle of this year, a total of 16 will be in routine operation at Germany’s largest airport. Since 2011, the new baggage machines have been tested by about 95,000 passengers. Passengers who request personal assistance or who would like to check in bulky items can, of course, still drop off their baggage at a check-in counter.
