FEBRUARY 2013 GROUND HANDLING INTERNATIONAL

Of note in recent times has been the opening of the Academy for Training and Qualification, which is well equipped according to IATA international standards. The best and most qualified staff have been recruited to take charge of supervision and training, and at the same time SGS sought the assistance of major IATA accredited companies to participate in developing the academy.

SGS made significant GSE investments in 2012

stopped service to Dammam, as did British Midland, which also pulled out of Jeddah and Riyadh. Air France also stopped service to Jeddah in September. However, we are hoping that Spice Jet will be coming to Riyadh along with Alitalia, which will also fly to Jeddah this year.”

SGS, because of its network, made a lot of investments in GSE in 2012: its purchases included nearly 40 baggage tractors, 13 sets of passenger steps and ten passenger buses. A host of suppliers helped operations: TLD, Mulag, Schopf, Harlan, Toyota, Cobus, Trepel, Mallaghan and Bombelli, to name but a few.

“The marketplace is in a positive phase of development, generally speaking,” adds Moteb. “Some examples: more and more airports in the Kingdom are opening for International traffic, for instance Medina, Taif and Gassim. Another example is the increasing religious traffic, with international passengers coming for the Hajj or Umrah. A third example is the forthcoming deregulation of the domestic traffic, where new operators will enter the market. As has been seen in other markets, this increased competition leads to, perhaps, more attractive airfares, more frequencies and/ or improved services, all of which will contribute to higher passenger volumes.”
