Ruins Refreshed

Castle ruins brought to life using a brand new LED Installation with help from Pulsar.

A dominant landmark in the modern city of Valkenburg aan de Geul in the Netherlands are the old ruins of Castle Valkenburg, which date back as far as the 11th and 12th centuries. In order to make the most of the incredible sight, an illumination concept titled ‘A City as a Host’, by Studio DL, allows for the ruins’ appearance to be emphasised with a dramatic lighting and projection display.

Restaging each evening, the LED

fixtures from Pulsar produce a dynamic contrast between light and shadow, creating an incredible backdrop for a number of events in the city, and working harmoniously with the special projections used on the ruins. The project used a variety of IP66

ChromaRange fixtures, each with a custom LED configuration of White- Amber-Blue. In total, 8 ChromaFlood 400s, 5 ChromaFlood 200s, 9 ChromaInGround 50s, and 5 ChromaStrip X3s were used for the installation, alongside a combination of 5 ChromaZone 12-200IPs that provided control of all the LED lighting levels and a DataSplitter DS5 for DMX distribution.

Pulsar ensured that the fixtures were meticulously checked to provide complete colour consistency across the full range provided. This allowed the designer to mix and match different products that all provide the same colour output. As well as having the colour consistency required for the project, the fixtures were described as “reliable, powerful, and all having a heavy- duty look and feel”. Design effects for the products include

built-in programmes and can provide static or slowly cross-fading colours as well as faster chases, pulses and dynamic lighting scenes. This can therefore support the video content in telling visitors a story of the castle’s history.

Because of the historic importance of the castle ruins, it was very important to be careful about operating in a way that wasn’t intrusive to the space. Care was taken across the installation, which took a month in total to complete. This caution meant that the installation suffered no faults, and the fixtures turned on without a hitch. The finished installation is an awe-inspiring and incredibly attractive sight to behold.
