FINDING A VOICE

Robe fixtures are used to help set the stage of European television programme The Voice of Germany (TVOG).

Lighting Designer Manuel da Costa chose a selection of nearly 200 Robe moving lights to add a touch of sparkle to the lighting for The Voice of Germany. Having worked with the show since its first series in 2011, Da Costa was provided with quite a flexible brief for the lighting design. The most important thing was for the lighting to be adaptable enough to suit each individual artist, as well as looking good on camera and impressing the 1200 strong studio audience.

Da Costa is a well renowned television Lighting Designer in Germany and, as he had worked with Robe products in the past, he knew he could use these to create the effects he had in mind. The total selection of Robe products was made up of 98 ColorSpot 2500E ATs, 62 ColorWash 2500E ATs, 26 ColorWash 1200E ATs and 2 ColorBeam 2500E ATs. A total of 74 of Robe’s ColorSpot

2500E ATs were rigged within a trussing system above the stage, working together with the other 24, which were hung on a matrix of towers behind the stage and around the central video wall. The 88 ColorWash 2500E ATs and 1200E ATs were also positioned in the roof, whilst the ColorBeam 2500E ATs were positioned

centre stage to provide a dramatic silhouette of artists as they entered and exited the stage. Robe’s products were selected for the

project because of the power and intensity that they could provide the stage. “Reliability, colour and output are excellent,” explains Da Costa, who added that as well as being very fast moving, their smooth dimming is also an excellent feature. “The Robe 2500 Series overall delivers a bright, strong and punchy beam,” he concludes. For The Voice of Germany 2012, Da Costa worked with a programming team of three, all of whom used grandMA consoles. Michael Baganz controlled all of the Robes and moving lights, whilst Uli Weiss operated white lights and Bjoerge Block ran video. Falk Rosenthal from Gravity produced the video content used for the show.
