Kitchen Lighting

Appetising Appearances

We take a look at different ways of using lighting to create that extra sparkle in the kitchen.

The kitchen is one of the most important spaces in a home, and can often serve as the central meeting space for any family. Because of the variety of activities completed in the kitchen, lighting requirements are quite diverse. Firstly, cooking can require a high level of light to ensure precision and safety, and there are a number of options for achieving this. Sally Storey, Design Director at John Cullen Lighting explains; “In areas where you do the most work, you should aim to create shadow-free task lighting. Under cupboard lighting is ideal for lighting work surfaces - use small compact fluorescents or LED Under Cupboard Lights. An unusual or fun solution can also involve back lighting a glass splashback with lights that change colour”. In order to make the kitchen an attractive and decorative space, it is also important to include some aspects of lighting design flare. An ideal way to create a more inviting space is through feature lighting, which can be used to bring the kitchen space together. “Recessed in profile lights are a great option for the kitchen as not only are they aesthetically pleasing to the eye but are also very functional,” explains Ajay Vasdev, Founding Director at Asco Lights. “They can be used as one line over the kitchen island, or could be

created to echo a square/rectangular kitchen island unit”. OSRAM has recently launched the TRESOL Cube Trio, a product that is ideally suited for the kitchen. The product is able to illuminate either the working or eating space perfectly. The TRESOL Cube Trio has adjustable modules for easy direction of light output, with a high quality aluminium design that will suit almost any kitchen design.

A flexible lighting system is ideal for the kitchen, where the sheer variety of uses of the space requires a lighting system that performs. Function and form are equally important considerations for the kitchen, where hard work and entertaining can often go hand in hand.
