were trialed by Gryphon Electrical, and following successful results these were installed in all of the academy’s classrooms and corridors. For the corridors, the Steinel Presence Control PRO Dual HF COM1 proved to be the perfect product, with its design centred on use in long passageways. Sensing movement in either direction, the system has two special high-frequency sensors that reliably cover both corridor directions and can reach a distance of 20m² in total.


“Not only has the project slashed the amount of electricity we use for lighting by 79%, it has also dramatically reduced the academy’s maintenance burden,” comments Mr Parkinson. “The precise control of the lighting by the Steinel presence detectors means that the lamps need replacing far less often. And, of course, there are no longer any compatibility problems between the lighting and the Interactive Whiteboards. In terms of lighting, Malcolm Arnold Academy now truly looks and functions like a modern learning environment”. upon to provide a diverse range of energy-saving lighting solutions. The School, a major collaboration with Siemens, is a purpose-built Engineering School, and the high-tech environment required a sophisticated lighting solution. “The University of Lincoln contracted a design team to draw up an energy efficiency plan of action, including a target to achieve a very low level of watts-per-square-metre,” comments Mark Gawtry, Siteco’s Sales Manager. “Siteco took a three-pronged approach to meeting this target. We focused on achieving big picture efficiency via a combination of efficient luminaires, low-energy lamps and lighting controls. This holistic approach meant that we ably met the watts-per-square-metre target”. The OSRAM range of high efficiency T5 fluorescent lamps were utilised to meet this remit. “KNX and DALI are crucial tools in managing energy and targeting inefficiencies,” says Hugh Whalley, Business Manager for the Projects & Solutions division of Siteco. “To take just one example, daylight sensors intelligently monitor the level of light within the Hub and automatically dim the
