Educational Lighting

Testing emergency products is an incredibly important aspect of maintaining a lighting system for educational facilities.

lighting accordingly. This means that, on a sunny day, less energy is used on artificial lighting. Intelligent controls are also having a huge impact on the maintenance burden at the University”. For a little added excitement at the Hub, colour LEDs highlight the impressive Siemens wind turbines that are on display to all visitors, making full use of the opportunity to showcase the Siemens brand to visitors touring the facility. For the corporate lounge, where Siemens welcomes VIPs, Siteco Lunis R® circular downlights were chosen to add a little extra excitment to the space, perfectly completing the exciting, cutting-edge installation.

Because of the number of people using an educational facility at any given moment, safe processes are something that need to be taken extremely seriously, as Matthew Stringer, Business Development Manager at P4 Fastel explains; “From the smallest primary school to the largest university estate, safety plays a paramount role in the life of any educational establishment. Within this ambit, emergency lighting is regarded as crucially important”. It is essential for schools to offer a safe means of evacuation in case of emergency, and this means testing systems frequently to ensure that everything is running as it should be. Automatic test systems have become an affordable option for schools, and offer considerable cost benefits. P4 has developed a range of automatic testing systems that are suitable for every eventuality and provide extremely valuable peace of mind.

“Testing plays a pivotal role in any

emergency lighting installation,” continues Stringer. “A regime of daily, monthly and annual testing of every luminaire in the system is required, with accurate records kept of each inspection and test. Maintained luminaires and exit signs must be checked daily, all emergency luminaires tested typically for less than 10 minutes every month and for their rated duration every year. Being compliant ultimately saves lives”. Lighting is of central importance for setting the atmosphere of schools, creating an inviting and productive space in which students will feel safe and eager to learn.
