FAMILY CRUISING
ANIMAL MAGIC IN ALASKA BY SARAH MACEFIELD “Taking a cruise to Alaska may not seem the most obvious family holiday. After all, there are none of the theme parks or beach resorts you’d normally associate with the USA. But what we discovered in the “final frontier” was an abundance of fabulous wildlife and dramatic scenery that guaranteed unforgettable experiences. On a cruise aboard Holland America
Line’s ship Oosterdam with my nine- year-old twin daughters, we stopped at Juneau where we spied a mother bear and her cubs plunging into a stream to catch salmon. The following day we watched in awe as a huge humpback whale breached just a few feet from our ship – so close we could see the barnacles on its back. A boat trip from Sitka took us closer to skittish sea otters and seals lazing along the shore, while bald eagles soared overhead. It was a trip full of animal magic and perfect for older children who appreciate such sights and remember them forever.”
