A RUSH IN WEST VIRGINIA BY HOWARD CARR “The sun was only just starting to peep over the Appalachian Mountains when we donned wetsuits to shoot the rapids through the New River Gorge in West Virginia. Sam, our instructor, went through the code words he’d shout when we encountered the white water. He was obviously a man of great faith. Apart from a couple from
Tennessee, we were all completely new to this game.
And the New River isn’t exactly
considered a mild saunter. With the neighbouring Gauley River, it’s ranked among the top six spots for rafting in the US.
Sam eased us into white-water
rafting gently by guiding us over a few minor ripples on the river. But soon we were being buffeted through the foamy waters of grade-five
rapids – just one grade below the toughest conditions. Remarkably, we came out of them
fully intact. And we quickly learned that unlike the Gauley, the New’s rapids are separated by stretches of calm water. This makes the New ideal for beginners who want to combine a fantastic adrenalin rush with the chance to admire beautiful scenery.”
