MID-ATLANTIC STATES

MID-ATLANTIC STATES IN THE SPOTLIGHT

The USA’s Mid-Atlantic states have plenty of reasons to be optimistic about a surge of interest from UK visitors in 2013, says Howard Carr

H

aving taken a battering from Superstorm Sandy towards the end of 2012, the mid-Atlantic

states of the US are looking to a brighter new year. A clutch of major events promises that

the region will be in the spotlight for all the right reasons – with increased interest from holidaymakers likely. The area’s prime gateways of New

York and Washington DC are already strong on the city-breaks scene. Tourism officials hope that a busy calendar ranging from blockbuster films to key anniversaries will encourage visitors to look beyond the cities to an area rich in scenic drives, historical attractions, soft adventure, beach resorts and fishing villages.

tastes. It stretches from New York and Pennsylvania in the north to Virginia in the south and covers seven states and the District of Columbia. Washington DC takes centre stage on January 21 with the inauguration of President Barack Obama. The capital’s hotels have spent more than $250 million sprucing themselves up for the occasion – and ensuring they are in tip- top condition for visitors throughout the rest of the year.

The Oscar-tipped film Lincoln, directed

by Steven Spielberg, opens in the UK on January 25. Telling the story of Abraham Lincoln, it was filmed entirely in Virginia. “The state tourism office has created a self-guided trail and interactive website

to help movie and history buffs visit the film locations as well as the restaurants, bars and shops that were the stars’ favourites,” says Vacations to America Managing Director Richard Wimms. West Virginia has also had its share

of the spotlight, with its appearance in the TV mini-series Hatfields and McCoys starring Kevin Costner. “West Virginia is the third-most

forested state in the US,” says America As You Like It Product Director Cath Pusey, who espouses its autumn foliage season which lasts from late September
