Untold Chapter One Hemlock The story (Un)told

A 65-minute mix from label founder Untold jumbling up Hemlock’s past, present and future, ‘Chapter One’ moves from the hushed murmurs of James Blake’s debut ‘Air & Lack Thereof’ to sharp left turns like the Darkstar-ish synth-pop of Nautiluss & Lord Skywave’s ‘Ultraviolet’. Along the way, you witness a shift from bone-dry percussion and quiet reserve on tracks like Untold’s ‘Discipline’ to the wasp-swarming ‘Motion The Dance’, Joe’s imposing ‘Studio Power On’ and Randomer’s ‘We Laugh, We Scream’, a sleazily squelchy breakbeat banger that conjures up peak scenes of a vast American desert rave about to tip over the edge.

It might be less searching and playing catch up with house and techno, but rather than a label shyly circling the floor, Hemlock is now throwing itself into the centre.Sunil Chauhan

T. Williams Rinse: 21 Rinse Must try harder

If part of being a good DJ is playing music people don’t know, a mix (or podcast) should be a chance to prove it, right? There’s nought wrong with bringing out the big guns to get a dancefloor reaction, but most heads these digital days want to learn a bit if they purchase (we hope) their favourite DJ’s latest studio set. Such is the predicament with T.Williams’ ‘Rinse’ opus. Twenty-two butt-bumping garage groovers put together (on the whole) with the skill expected of a tried-and-tested DJ, it would send any dancefloor ballistic. However, a tracklist made up mostly of the biggest bassy house tunes of 2012 — from Breach, Disclosure, George Fitzgerald, Dusky, Julio Bashmore, Eats Everything — makes this about as useful as an OS map of our own backyard. If Rinse or T. Williams want to teach today’s clued-up kids a thing or two, they’ll need to try harder. Lisa Loveday

Mark Knight & Wehbba Toolroom Knights Brasil Toolroom Records 7.0

Rio revelling

Mark Knight here enlists the help of Brazilian DJ luminary Wehbba, with Knight’s selection settling into a deep, party-driven vibe. Wehbba’s mix is deeper still. The Brazilian influence here is often subtle, but there’s a hint of carnival undercurrent bubbling away. Solid house workouts from both parties. Tristan Parker

Various Come In We’re Melodica Vol. 1 Melodica Recordings 7.5

Balearic bubblegum

Chris Coco is nothing new to ethereal Balearic pop, but his Melodica imprint is — only one-year-old, in fact. To celebrate, he’s collected re-rubs of its releases from a range of artists — Ejeca, Synkro, Max Essa — all with the same aim: to leave you floating on a cloud blowing strawberry bubbles high on 2C-B. And does it? Almost. Lisa Loveday

Various/Mogwai A Wrenched Virile Lore Rock Action 8.0

Gremlins in the works

Glaswegian post- rockers Mogwai’s guitar crescendos often seem like a sound set in stone. Some remixers such as The Soft Moon who’ve taken on last year’s ‘Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will’ LP keep it equally monolithic, but Cylob chisels it into more abstract shapes, and Xander Harris melts it down into liquid house. 2 Bears 2 Bears 1 Love Defected Public house

That Raf Rundell and Joe Goddard seem more like two blokes you’d meet down the boozer rather than superstar DJs lording it up in a VIP lounge is a crucial part of The 2 Bears’ charm. And the duo’s first official mix compilation feels like a shaggy dog story you’d hear at the bar — a bit meandering and full of old chestnuts like Paperclip People’s ‘Throw’, Metro Area’s ‘Dance Reaction’ and Isolee’s ‘Beau Mot Plage’ that you’ve heard hundreds of times before — but also a bloody good laugh. CD1 is a carnival selection featuring rudeboy riddims from Toddla T and Heartbreak, whilst CD2 heads down the disco with Ashley Beedle and Black Devil Disco Club, and it’s all — err — ‘enlivened’ by Raf occasionally grabbing the mic like a drunken uncle at a wedding reception. Making you feel distinctly less embarrassed about dancing like one to it. Paul Clarke

Daniel Avery FabricLive 66 Fabric Records Space-rave success

King of the new machine-funk, Daniel Avery can do no wrong at present, so it seems perfectly natural for him to step up for his ‘Fabric Live’ mix at a relatively early stage. Unsurprisingly, it doesn’t turn out too shabby. Avery gladly accepts the invitation to do what he does best, with a heady ride of trippy, cosmic electro- house and pure dancefloor dirty grooves, symbolic of his own production talents. Several of his own gems (‘Naïve Reception’ is beautifully hypnotic robot funk) sit alongside various sharp selections, including the blissful come-up of Simian Mobile Disco’s ‘Supermoon’, and a tasty new track from Andrew Weatherall and protégée Timothy J. Fairplay, ‘Dry Heat’, which chugs through before the anthemic space-disco of Compuphonic’s ‘Sequoia’ lands things gently. Perfectly-pitched Fabric business, and another reminder that there currently isn’t anyone making or mixing this sound better than Avery. Tristan Parker

Hooky, Parky and Mike Pickering take a disc each to celebrate the 30th birthday of Britain’s first seat of acid house, the Hacienda. It’s all here, Parky’s mix spanning MK’s ‘Burning’ to MAW’s ‘I Can’t Get No Sleep’, Pickering’s taking in the Hashims and the Sterling Voids, while Hooky drops everything from the Roses to Sub Sub. Fanga & Maalem Abdullah Guinea Fangnawa Experience Strut 8.0

Break from the norm

All 4/4’d out? Delve into this fusion of Afrobeat (as in actual Afrobeat, not Afro-house) and Moroccan Gnawa music from house scene chroniclers Strut Records. Raw, ragged, pure funk set against cascades of building rhythms and layers of traditional Gnawa vocals. Authentic and refreshing. Tristan Parker

Various Future Sound Of Buenos Aires ZZK 8.0

Not tango

It’s easy to be sceptical about a title with the “Future Sound Of” preface, but this comp is the real deal. Mixing the South American rhythms of cumbia, champeta and more with techno, bass and 8-bit electronics, this diverse and enjoyable comp suggests there’s something new under the Argentine sun.Ben Murphy
