BPM 2013
After the Mayan calender reaches the end the great cycle on December 21, BPM festival welcomes in the new age – and the New Year – from January 4 at Playa Del Carmen, dubbed ‘the Mayan Riviera’, with ten days of partying, day and night, alongside the world’s best DJs...
Kicking of the New Year with a bang, followed by another bang, then another (you guessed, it’s a kick drum), BPM has become the only respectable way to start January, running 4- 13. The second wave of its jaw- dropping line-up includes a cross section of the great and the good, taking in bonafide pioneers such as Carl Cox and Sasha, alongside US legends Doc Martin, Cajmere and Masters at Work, and the freshest new talent, including Soul Clap, Infinity Ink, Catz ‘N Dogz and Fur Coat. And that’s just the tip of the action, which takes place on beaches, around pools and by the sea, under sun-filled skies and on star speckled nights.
With many tacking a holiday onto the festival, either before or after, you can get your dose of winter sun and pumping dance action all in one go. We picked some of the standout parties and asked the DJs playing there what their BPM tips are, and what 2013 has in store...

What we’re most looking forward to about BPM: “South of the border what really gets our hearts racing are micheladas (Mexican beer with lime juice and hot sauce in a salt-rimmed glass), taco night, guacamole and a mild case Montezuma’s Revenge.” Top track for day raving: No kick drum can beat the smoothed out soul of Roy Ayers ‘Everybody Loves The Sunshine’. Plus, day raving gets two thumbs up for stimulating the ocular-endocine system. Top track for night raving: “Lately the rump thumping funk of Sexual Harassment’s ‘I Need A Freak’ has set the tone, both sweet and nasty!” Best advice for partying over a week: “The best advice for a whole week of partying is don’t fear sleep! When your friends say ‘sleep is for wimps’, just tell them to go screw and take a siesta. Oh, and hydrate, especially when it’s hot down Mexico way.”
Home comfort we will be packing in my suitcase: “Dr Bronners castile soap, for that semi-cultish-religious-meets- UFO-pheonomena-extra-clean feeling! What better way to wash away the rave.” NYE Resolution: “Probiotics, digestive enzymes and chi-gung. Finally starting to get what ‘wax on, wax off’ is all about!”
