Nina Kraviz Victor Rosado

Remixes Rosa

10

I got very excited when I saw Victor’s name getting mentioned on the one-sheet for these releases — not sure how this project came about, but the results are stunning! Victor Rosado had first-hand experience of what went on at the Paradise Garage; being a regular and also DJing alongside Larry Levan. Over the past decade, Rosado has been more active in the studio, remixing some of the classics that he used to play at the Garage. Now he’s turned his skills to Nina Kraviz’s productions, transforming the likes of ‘Aus’, ‘Taxi Talk’ and ‘Choices’ into sleazy New York-style disco/house tracks nuanced by the idiosyncratic spirit of the Paradise Garage. Fantastic.

Adult.

Shari Vari/122 Hours Of Fear Ghostly 7.5

Regarded by some as the first Detroit techno tune, ‘Shari Vari’ by A Number Of Names emerged in the early ‘80s, employing the aesthetics of new-wave and minimal synth music. Arguably, it’s not really a techno tune, but nevertheless it’s a great tune. A few decades down the line, another Detroit-based, minimal synth act, Adult., pay tribute to this questionable moment in techno’s evolution with an energetic, electro cover version, backed with the noir-ish new wave of ‘122 Hours Of Fear’. Not quite matching the standard of the original, their version of ‘Shari Vari’ maintains a cool, sophisticated essence.

Aeroplane feat Jamie Principle

In Her Eyes Aeropop 7.5

Needing little introduction, house legend Jamie Principle and, of course, Aeroplane, collude on this rubbery disco jam that feels part-Imagination and part-Daft Punk. Raucous and rambunctious, it’s got all the trappings of a potential radio hit and an arsenal of super-compressed remixes will also guarantee this in the clubs. Amongst all of this, however, is a more tasteful remix from favorites, Tiger & Woods,

Bat For Lashes All Your Gold (Hercules & Love

Affair Remix) Parlophone 8.5

Classic ‘Def Mix’-style makeover from Hercules & Love Affair. Keeping the spirit of Knuckles, Morales and Tomiie very much alive in 2012.

Kris Menace

Hide feat Miss Kittin Compuphonic

who do their signature cut ‘n’ paste makeover — providing the release’s highlight.

D/R/U/G/S The Source Of Light (Daniel

Avery Remix) Different 8.5

Calum Wright’s restless, fluorescent electro gets a brilliant reworking by man-of- the-moment, Daniel Avery, who’s not set a foot wrong ahead of a mix for Fabric, singles for Erol Alkan’s Phantasy Sound label and a numerous amount of remixes. Tempering the mood considerably, Avery’s remix of ‘The Source Of Light’ swaps euphoric synth rushes for a bubbling 303 and a low-slung, Peter Hook-style bassline.

Fab Mayday

Do What You Like Relish 7.5

Reminding me a little of Rebolledo’s classic chugger, ‘Venganza y Seducción’, for Comeme, ‘Do What You Like’ takes a sinuous, repetitive guitar phrase and layers it over a tough, compressed, motorik rhythm; a hard, icy-cool no-wave ditty that’s robust enough to fit into techno sets. Flickering, strobing effects give that disco-not-disco feel and a remix from label boss, Robbi ‘Headman’ Insinna, changes the mood a little with some decorative, Italo-style synth touches. Top remix package with useful ‘Dub’ and ‘Reprise’ versions.

In Flagranti

Skematic Tracks Vol. 3 Codek 9.0

The In Flagranti duo put the brakes on their signature cut ‘n’ paste style for this more dreamy excursion into psychedelic disco

spheres. Calling on Rekids’ Toby Tobias for his keyboard skills, these two tracks ‘What A Rush’ and ‘Belt Freeway’ shirk the jagged, spiky disco-not-disco for a really out-there approach — drawing on a more kitsch, retro-futuristic idea of techno and deep NYC-style house music, with dreamy keys and sci-fi effects. So good!

Slow It Down & Elijah Collins

Alright EP Retrospective

8.0 Latest EP collaboration from London-based Elijah Collins and Glaswegian duo, Slow It Down. Purists and lovers of the ‘80s boogie sound will approve the title track, for its elastic bass and Linn drum kicks, and the Janet Jackson ‘Don’t Stand Another Chance’-sampling ‘Tramadol Boogie’ will also get an acknowledging nod. For those wanting a less retro fix, then head for the Ruben & Ra dub, but the pure, revival styles of the original productions are this record’s strength.

Waze & Odyssey

Love Attack (Mark E Remix) Disco Bloodbath 9.5

Riding the popularity of the current mid-’90s house revival, alongside the likes of Bicep, are the brilliant Waze & Odyssey who have maintained a steady output of quality bangers since their beginnings, only a matter of months ago. Both tracks ‘Love Attack’ and ‘She’s A Hooker’ (the latter being my particular favorite) do the business, nodding to the likes of MK and Kerri Chandler along the way; but fear not, disco faithful, as Mark E is also here on remix duty, providing a superb proto-house style makeover of the title tune.

6.0 Throbbing disco- nouveau featuring the vocal talent of one Miss Kittin. Features more throbbing remixes by Alexander Maier, Maethelvin and Nhar all trying to out ‘throb’ each other.

JONATHAN BURNIP jonathanburnip@gmail.com QUICKIES

Lana Del Rey Blue Velvet/Ride

(Remixes) Polydor 7.0

LindstrØm remixes by-numbers and Paul Woolford’s Special Request remix sounds like an old ‘breakbeat house’ dubplate from a Fabio set at Rage, circa ‘92.

Sleazy McQueen

I’m Tired Lost Paradise 8.0

All of our favourite nu-disco musketeers are here — Pete Herbert, Yam Who? and Space Ghost — to remix this dreamy disco delight from Sleazy McQueen. Top stuff.
