‘Child’ might already be troubling most people’s end of year lists, but his last minute effort for Hypercolour is sure to have 2012’s pundits in two minds. The B-side ‘Every Inch’ might be vintage Fitzgerald — ethereal liquid garage imbued with sub bass, built around a soulful vocal sample and snappy 4/4 — and Deetron’s bumpy remix is brewing
with hypnotic acid, but it’s the lead tune ‘Needs You’ that takes it next level here. Tough, heads-down garage-infused house, it’s a pumping, thunderous treat; heady stuff held back until peak time — a bridge to bigger and bolder things. Sirrius!

To describe Waff’s music as ‘paint-by-numbers’ is no criticism. More a reflection of his adherence to strict patterns of production — regimented hi-hats, winding builds and deliberate, drawn-out drops. The result is precise, slickly-produced house that hits the spot every time. As funky as functional gets, ‘Eclipse’ is sturdy dancefloor fodder built around a globular bottom line. On a
slightly more lawless tip, ‘Ibiza’ lives up to its name; a sultry slice of rolling tech house that coils into a churning, head-swirling whirlwind designed with the island’s terracotta terraces in mind. Meanwhile, ‘Joolz’ is woozy progressive house, completing the chunkiest, most upfront Hot Creations opus yet.

Elson David may not be a name in lights just yet, but Luke Harris (Duct) and Owen Howells are certainly knocking on posterity’s door with this release. Conjuring crisp broken acid marrying the two-step Eliphino with the cloak-and-dagger menace of Altered Natives, ‘God Bless’ is Aphex for the new generation. ‘The Awakening’, however, is a slice of funky fun; a Sugarhill Gang
sample threaded over a cavernous bassline that boogies towards an aggressive 303 top-line, while ‘Woke’ is straight up tunnel techno with, yep, you guessed it, yet more acid. Eye-opening stuff.

Foreboding. Dread. Excitement. There are some tunes that are so large, so dark, so monstrous, they induce a kind of trepidation when they enter the ear canals, spark that synaptic recognition. This is one of them — Carl Craig’s best for a while and a worthy addition to his vast, spotless remix discography. Rising synths loom with such malevolence, over
a chugging techno beat, you’d be forgiven if your spine was frozen by their sepulchral forms. Wonky, designed to tip too- far-gone heads into precipitous abysses (or holes), it’s when the icy funk keys come in, like a frozen Stevie Wonder, that the roof’s blown clear. BIG tune, best release yet on Visionquest.
