Welcome
Welcome to EIBTM 2012 – Celebrating 25 Years
Welcome to EIBTM 2012. We are delighted you have joined us for this very special edition of EIBTM. As I am sure you will all be aware, the show is celebrating its 25th edition this year and we have got a lot to talk about.
We have so many new and exciting features on the show fl oor this year, as well as returning favorites, brought back due to popular demand. I’d like to take a few moments to introduce some of these to you before you hit the busy show fl oor and get completely absorbed in the in the buzz of business, education, networking and 25th birthday celebrations.
So, what’s new – where do we start? Firstly, yesterday saw the launch of the highly anticipated EIBTM Forum. Barbara Kellerman, one of America’s most infl uential business leaders and a Harvard lecturer on leadership inspired us with her ”The End of Leadership” seminar, which was followed by our fi rst “Lifetime Achievement Award”.
We are also delighted to announce the successful integration of Business Travel into the show this year, with a dedicated stream
of education delivered in partnership with the Association of Corporate Travel Executives (ACTE) and a new Business Travel pavilion on the show fl oor, which will showcase business travel suppliers and provide a specialist area for meetings with corporation travel planners.
This year will also see the launch of the fi rst hybrid event at EIBTM. We will be streaming a number of our key sessions live to those who were unable to attend the show and you will also be able to view on demand following the show at
www.eibtm.com/hybrid.
The EIBTM Welcome Reception will take place at the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya where you can network with over 15,200 like-minded meetings industry professionals and take in the stunning views of Barcelona.
Don’t forget to get involved in the EIBTM 25th birthday celebrations via social media by following us @EIBTMevent.
On behalf of the team at Reed Travel Exhibitions, we hope that you have a very successful show and fi nd some time to raise a glass at one of our many networking events to celebrate our 25th Birthday.

How could anyone in our industry not have felt totally immersed in what we do this year? It’s been a year when the meetings and events industry seemed to continually make the headlines. From London 2012 which probably took
centre stage, to the UEFA European Championships held in
Ukraine and Poland, then Africa hosted the Cup of Nations, the US organised the Ryder Cup and various European nations had more than their fair share of meetings to discuss the economy. On top of all that Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her Jubilee – perhaps it was the year for London to be in the spotlight!
But the IBTM portfolio of events has also had its fair share of success stories on 5 continents. We started the year by celebrating AIME’s 20th anniversary and a great show, which delivered a 16.5% increase on Hosted Buyer attendance compared to 2011 with 500 buyers from 27 countries participating in the programme. Of these fi gures, 51% of Hosted Buyers were attending AIME for the fi rst time, which is a great achievement.
Back in the spring we held our fi rst-ever Arabic industry educational seminars at GIBTM which, together with the rest of the sessions, created the highest attendance to date. It’s heartening to see that the event, its buyers and suppliers really are helping to grow the meetings industry in the region as the show attendees gave us some overwhelmingly positive feedback that has already secured 80% of the show contracted for 2013.
All records were broken at CIBTM in Beijing this September when we proudly witnessed the largest number of Chinese Hosted Buyers attending the event – some 35% more than in 2011. Qualifying buyers is one key component to the success of our Hosted Buyer Programme at all our events, but it tested us to the limits in China as there is now a signifi cant increase in the number of professionals operating in the sector, not only from Beijing or Shanghai but we also went out to the second and third tier cities over the course of the summer months to explain the MICE sector and fi nd new association and corporate buyers.
It would be very easy for us to accept all the individuals who register for our Hosted Buyer Programmes around the world and boost numbers just because we said ‘yes’ to them all. But we won’t compromise our events or the standard of quality that we demand. Every show and every Hosted Buyer team does the work to ensure that everyone has proven business to place and the right purchasing authority.
This year also saw the announcement of the intention to rotate AIBTM between Chicago and Orlando in the US with next year’s event taking place at McCormick Place, Chicago from June 11-13th 2013. This move will offer all stakeholders access to new business opportunities in two key gateway cities that are themselves major hubs of the meeting industry.
So, it’s been an exciting and challenging year but we look to 2013 in anticipation of providing you with our global business opportunities at all 6 shows around the world.
