Twenty years in the events industry has taught us the value of listening. Listening to the nuances of each individual brief. Discerning what is required of us in every situation. Tuning in to changes in the business environment. Being sensitive to the needs of our own environment. And fine tuning what we do so that we bring real added benefit in a changing events landscape.

Asia-Pacifi c research announced at the AIME 2012 Business Events Forum

AIME started on an upbeat and positive

note when Phil Ruthven from IBISWorld took the stage at AIME’s Business Events Forum on Tuesday 21 February to share a forecast for the meetings

and incentives industry as well as a general

overview of the world’s economy. Sally Greenhill of The Right Solution then went on to reveal the Asia- Pacifi c results from the recent IBTM Global Industry Research.

The positivity of the Forum began with a survey of the packed room which found that 64% of those present expected 2012 to be more successful than 2011.

Happy 20th Birthday AIME!

The cutting of a birthday cake and three cheers marked the opening of the 20th anniversary of the Asia-Pacifi c Incentives & Meetings Expo (AIME) which took place in Melbourne, Australia on the 21-22 February.

Well-known, Australian media personality Ita Buttrose, who attended the very fi rst AIME back in 1993, opened the show and was joined by Karen Bolinger, Chief Executive Offi cer of the Melbourne Convention + Visitors Bureau (MCVB), Sally de Swart, Reed Travel Exhibition (RTE) Director of AIME, Cr Carl Jetter, representing the City of Melbourne and Sue Calwell, former MCVB CEO who started AIME 20 years ago.

The exhibition, which took place at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC), drew impressive crowds of buyers and exhibitors from around the world. Early, pre-audited statistics are positive with 500 buyers, 779 exhibitors and 3384 visitors attending, and support that after 20 years, AIME is still going strong.

Of the 779 exhibitors that attended AIME 2012, there were 206 new exhibitors including big brand names

such as Marriott Hotels and American Express Meetings and Events. The show fl oor was also larger, taking up 5,778 m2

.

The Offi cial Welcome Reception on Monday 20 February wowed a crowd of over 2000 people at an impressive pop-up bar at the Melbourne Pavilion in Flemington where attendees were entertained with a 12-piece band, an illuminated oyster and vodka bar and Imperial Chinese kitchen.

The AIME award winners were:

• Outstanding Contribution Award: Leigh Harry, Chief Executive of Tourism Victoria • Best Stand 36m2 Dockside Group

and Under:

• Best Stand Over 36m2 Tourism Fiji

:

• Best New Exhibitor Stand: American Express Meetings & Events

• Best Environmentally Sustainable Stand: Accor Asia Pacifi c

The Education Program kicked off with the hard-hitting Business Events Form on the Tuesday

morning and continued with seminars which were created with industry association partners to cover relevant industry issues.

Attendees also gained inspiration for their events with an impressive lineup of charismatic speakers and unusual acts at the Saxton Ultimate Event Experience on the Wednesday morning. On the show fl oor Hosted Buyers, visitors and exhibitors dined on South African cuisine at the Globe restaurant and tasted the hawker-style menu on offer at SingaporeXpress, a new addition for 2012.

Further networking opportunities were aplenty with new Exhibitor Networking Drinks on the show fl oor on Tuesday afternoon and a new event, Nightcap Networking held at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA) on the Tuesday night, where the annual AIME awards were presented acknowledging the best stands and outstanding contribution to the industry.

AIME 2013 will be returning on 19 and 20 March 2013.

The Forum also focused on the boom of ‘Mega- Asia’ and the massive growth all over Asia especially in China and even in smaller economies such as Laos. Ruthven explained that India’s economy would soon take over Japan’s.

The anticipated Asia-Pacifi c results of the IBTM Global Industry Research highlighted key themes: • 83% of buyers in the Asia-Pacifi c region are choosing to stay within the region for their events, with Australia, New Zealand and

Singapore taking top slots as destinations in the last twelve months.

• The forecast for where events will be held over the next twelve months is quite similar to the last year’s results with Thailand looking to push Singapore from the number three position. • More than half are keen to use new destinations in the next year with Indonesia, Korea, and Vanuatu mentioned

• Average spend per event for the region was US$34,712

• 42% of buyers in the region predicted an increase in volume of events, compared to 53% for buyers worldwide.
