14.00 – 14.45 Keynote session: The Importance and Value of Certifi cation to Members and Industry


The association business model is ever-changing to meet the needs of its members and the landscape of the industry or profession it serves. Certification is but one mechanism associations are using to bridge that gap – to provide more value for their members and ideally to address a void within the industry served. With certification becoming more recognized globally, associations are making the creation and even the enhancement of certification programs a strategic objective of their organizations.


Doctors and lawyers are required to have a license or certification in order to practice in the health and legal professions, respectively. Why is the same importance not leveraged for other professions? For instance, why is it not required that a meeting planner have an industry certification in order to “practice” as a meeting planner? And, why is an individual handling hazardous materials not required to have an industry certification to be considered an environmental, health and safety professional? There seems to be a gap in importance and relevance that must be bridged in order for these professions and others to succeed.


Problems arise when certification programs are created as solely revenue drivers by associations that comprise a number of industries. With little or no attention being given to whether there is a true need in the industry, whether there is a mechanism within the industry to encourage compliance to standards and continuing education/recertification and whether the association has the proper plan in place to generate the awareness needed to sustain its growth and provide true value to the members who obtain it.
