CALENDAR CALL Maitland Tower Erie Crossing Shanty

The Maitland Tower kit builds into a model of the tower's initial configuration and can be modified to represent a number of other Erie west end towers. Maitland also broke up the block between Glen Echo and Cold Springs on the Dayton Branch and was used by the DT&I to issue trains orders. This served to extend the tower life more than anything else and remained in service well into the Conrail years. Crossing Shanty not included

This 48-page, 8¹/₂″×11″ softcov- er is packed with nicely-printed photos of the major railroads of the Windy City, taken in 1970 and 1971. Subjects include the pas- senger operations of the South Shore; Rock Island; Chicago & North Western; Chicago Transit Authority; Illinois Central, Burling- ton Northern; Penn Central; Gulf, Mobile & Ohio; Milwaukee Road; Santa Fe; and Grand Trunk Western, all in the final run- up to Amtrak on May 1, 1971. There’s also a nice selection of early Amtrak trains during the “rainbow era” immediately following A- day and some coverage of the Butterworth Tours equipment on the Rock post-Amtrak. Hamlin also covered the freight scene; some notable subjects include a Chesapeake & Ohio C630 leading GP30s, Rock Island E units on freight, black and gold Monon hood units on a caboose hop, Burlington SD24s on freight, a Soo GP35-GP30-GP35 set, an El- gin, Joliet & Eastern repowered Baldwin centercab, and four surprisingly clean Penn Central C425s leading a Milwaukee Road freight out of Bensenville Yard. The book sells for $24.95 plus $3.00 shipping from The Railroad Press, P.O. Box 444-R, Hanover, PA 17331; www.alco628.com. Indiana University Press has released

a an updated and expanded edition of The Indiana Rail Road Company by Christopher Rund in honor of the road’s 25th anniver- sary. The book discusses INRD’s growth over two and a half decades and describes the development of the Illinois Central and discusses of the state of the railroad busi- ness in the era leading up to deregulation and IC’s later years of expansion and con- traction. These events led to Tom Hoback’s purchase of the Indianapolis Sub in 1986, when it became the nucleus of today’s Indi- ana Rail Road. The original text is accompa- nied by a foreword by Fred Frailey and four new chapters, one by Rund, one by Eric Pow- ell, and two by Frailey. Two chapters of new material trace the history of the Milwaukee Road’s Chicago, Terre Haute & Southeast- ern, which forms INRD’s north-south Latta Sub. Another covers the railroad’s branch built to serve the new Bear Run coal mine, and the fourth new chapter describes a typ- ical day’s operations. The book is illustrated with dozens of b&w and color photos from the steam era through today’s big EMD’s and features a color dust jacket by Mitch Markovitz showing an SD9043MAC on a coal train, as well as a Markovitz system map plus six others. This 304-page, 8¹/₂″×10″ hardcover sells for $39.95 from In- diana University Press, Dept. RF, 601 N. Morton St., Bloomington, IN 47404; http://iupress.indiana.edu; 800/842-6796; email iuporder@indiana.edu.
