Nickel Plate Road No. 765 Struts Its Stuff on Norfolk Southern Excursions

IN LATE JULY, NICKEL PLATE ROAD Berkshire No. 765 began making a series of employee appreciation excursions across the Norfolk Southern system. While the trips, which will continue through September, are not open to the public, they are providing the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society’s big Lima plenty of main line running. The employ- ee excursions themselves are usually short, but the deadhead moves between terminals provide plenty of extended main line running for chasers to enjoy. The Berkshire is accompa- nied by Norfolk Southern’s Nickel Plate her- itage ES44AC No. 8100 on all trips. No. 765’s first activity took place on July 20 as

it moved from its home base in Fort Wayne, Ind., to Bellevue, Ohio, in preparation for five excur- sions over former Pennsy trackage between Bellevue and Bucyrus on July 21 and 22. (The train passed the Sunrise Cooperative in Bucyrus headed back to Bellevue on July 21, above.) On July 23 the locomotive and train dead-

headed from Bellevue to Toledo, Ohio, for the following weekend’s runs between Homestead Yard and Maumee, two trips each day on July 28 and 29. After that, on July 30-31 the consist made a two-day deadhead move from Toledo to Portsmouth, Ohio, and then on the Williamson, W.Va. The train passed a color position light signal near Williamson on July 31 (opposite

bottom). On August 4 and 5 a total of five trips were made out of Williamson to Ought One in the morning and Naugatuck in the afternoon. On August 5 the train was turned on the Wolf Creek Wye in Kermit, W.Va. (opposite top) as passengers observed from the rear vestibule (opposite bottom right). Then on August 6 and 7 it was back north to Columbus, Ohio, as 765 made a deadhead move through Columbiana, Ohio, eastbound on the Fort Wayne Line bound for Pittsburgh, Penn. and four trips on August 11 and 12 between Conway Yard and Homewood Junction. Then, on to Harrisburg for five trips and back west in September to Missouri. — WALT LANKENAU
