MECHANICVILLE, NEWYORK, has been a dot on railroad maps since the Rensselaer & Saratoga’s first train passed through in August of 1835. That dot grew a little larger when it became a junction point in 1879 when the Boston, Hoosac Tunnel & Western built its line west from North Adams, Mass., to connect with the New York, West Shore & Buffalo line at Rotterdam Junction, N.Y. The railroads quickly became an im- portant link between the mills and factories of New England and the lu- crative markets of the northeast. The Delaware & Hudson leased the R&S in 1871, while the BHT&W was leased by the Fitchburg Railroad in 1879. In turn, the Boston & Maine leased the Fitchburg in 1900 after which Mechanicville became a major junction point and gateway for rail traffic to and from New England...
