long haul traffic while trains that crew change in Syracuse have Q600-series symbols. Ethanol movements generally operate with K600-series (and a few K400-series) symbols. The multilevel traffic carries Q200-series symbols. Coal is in the V800-series, garbage is K200-series, and grain is G400-series. While almost every road train operates in and out of Selkirk, the Q-090/Q-091 pair (the “Salad Shooter”) operates as far east as the Rotterdam Industrial Park as unit refrigerated reefer boxcars with Union Pacific power.


Railfan Strategy


Once you have your radio scanner programmed it becomes a matter of where you want to be to photograph trains. Generally, the best frequency of both eastbound and westbound traffic in daylight west of Selkirk on the Selkirk Subdivision is between 6:00 and 10:00 a.m. Given the track geogra- phy between Schenectady and Selkirk is more north-south than east-west, eastbound trains can be photographed from a multitude of locations year around. You’ll have better options with


westbound trains during the summer months (such as French’s Hollow Tres- tle at Guilderland Center seen from a pull-off from Fullers Station Road). If you’re interested in the Boston and New Jersey-bound traffic in the imme- diate Selkirk area, the frequency is steady for the River Subdivision throughout the day — never quite busy yet not considered slow. Trains will op- erate eastbound, but unfortunately the heaviest frequency of eastbound trains is pre-dawn. There is usually a pair of late afternoon westbound trains into
