New Genesee & Wyoming Line Gets a Green Light
THE COLUMBUS & CHATTAHOOCHEE RAILROAD (CCR) is the newest member of the far-flung Genesee & Wyoming Industries family of short lines. On July 1, 2012, CCR took over operations on Norfolk South- ern’s 26-mile “S” Line between Girard and Mahrt, Ala., on July 1, 2012. After picking up its train at the NS Columbus, Ga., yard, the Mahrt Turn heads down 9th Street in Columbus (above) on the inaugural run with
Advantages of Moving Mail by Rail says the agency could save up to $100 million a year by putting some of its over-the-road truck move- ments on rails, without requiring any changes to the present network. By realigning the mail processing and transportation network around rail freight corridors and making a long-term commitment to the use of inter- modal service, even greater savings could be realized. The USPS currently spends $3.3 bil- lion a year on highway transportation, com- pared to just $40 million on rail.

Patched SD60s Are Running on Canadian National
THE 43 FORMER OAKWAY SD60S purchased in the spring by Canadian National are beginning to see service in patched EMD colors, like Nos. 5411 and 5412, former Oakway 9042 and 9043 at Centralia, Ill., on July 22, 2012. CN has renumbered the units 5400-5442; they come from the former Oakway/GMTX 9013-9099 group but not all units in the series went to CN. In June the railroad began to repaint the units and run them through the former Illinois Central shop at Centralia.

SD40-3 No. 3348 leading. The train will cross the Chattahoochee River into Alabama and then head south to Mahrt. The railroad will handle approximately 17,000 carloads a year (primarily business related to the MeadWestvaco coated paperboard plant at Mahrt), plus general mer- chandise. CCR is part of GWI’s Southern Region, as is Georgia South- western, which also serves Columbus via NS trackage rights.
