and surrounded by pines, the venerable New and Old Courses comprise the best 36 inland holes of golf in England, according to some. A favorite of Greg Norman’s, it’s been described as an English Augusta National, and it’s just 10 miles from Heathrow airport. It costs about $260 per round on the New Course in summer, plus another $70 or so for a caddy.

Already popular from the 12th century, the game was banned in 1457 by King James II of Scotland, who felt it was distracting young men from archery practice. Finally James IV threw in the towel in 1502 when he became a golfer himself, and the world’s most famous links course has been making history ever since.
