outlook for the industry is good. The survey, considered to be the ‘Bible’ of franchising since its inception in 1984, makes for some reassuring reading. The direction of fi gures this year is

determinedly upwards with an increase of 29 systems taking the total of recognised franchised businesses to 929. Plus, despite a contraction in UK businesses in general, franchises are reporting growth over the last 12 months. Other welcome news from the survey is


that four out of fi ve franchisees believe that they have a competitive advantage (over other small businesses) as the result of running a franchised business. Furthermore, the overwhelming majority of franchisees report that they have a satisfactory relationship with their franchisor – the highest proportion recorded over the past 10 years.
