to do well, the logic being that if they take on board the systems, procedures and know-how that made the original business successful, they in turn are likely to replicate that success. There are, of course, a great many hugely successful franchises that bear this out. The implication, therefore, is that franchisees agree to ‘sing from the same hymn sheet’ and channel their efforts within the framework set out by the franchisor as specified in the operations manual. That is not to say that new ideas would not be considered; I know of several

examples of worthwhile new developments conceived by franchisees and, with the franchisor’s approval, subsequently adopted throughout the network. But, in general, I believe that franchisees should not aim to do things differently or steer their businesses onto an unproven course that could be detrimental to the brand. However, you have raised an interesting issue which all prospective franchisees should be clear upon. My advice is to explore your concerns at the discussion stage with the franchisors in whom you are interested. I am sure they will be pleased to explain their respective policies on this important point. n
