INDUSTRY NEWS COMMENT: THE GREEN DREAM Richard Carter
A FEW years ago ‘going green’ was being hailed as the ‘next big thing’, helping improve efficiency, cut costs and conserve the planet for future generations. But today the picture seems a little different with cynics wondering if the green dream is running out of steam, strangled by the harsh economic realities of the global downturn. There’s no denying the profile of carbon footprints and being ‘environmentally friendly’ doesn’t seem as high. I’ve heard several comments
that the green agenda is a luxury many businesses simply can’t afford to embrace. While I can understand this to a degree it is a short sighted view that in some cases could land companies in trouble with the law. Certainly, with the seemingly relentless surge in energy bills and petrol prices, conserving raw materials and power has never been more important from a financial and environmental viewpoint. The way we dispose of goods and recycle products at home and work has changed dramatically in recent times. Here at Nimans more than 100 tonnes of plastic waste, cardboard and paper were given a new lease of life last year as part of a productive recycling process. A bailing machine produces around two full 500kg bales of plastic packaging each month which are sent to be made into carpet fibres in India and China. The comms industry remains at the vanguard of
the green revolution. Technologies such as video conferencing, UC and smartphones have transformed the way we keep in contact, often providing a viable alternative to face-to-face meetings. The green agenda is very much alive and kicking. There’s no going back.

Chess nets a buy hat-trick
AN ACQUISITION hat-trick has resulted in Chess netting an additional £3.3m of annual turn- over and 1,500 customers. The telco has bagged Supply
Communications, Rely Telecom and Deep Blue Networks in a string of quick buys made pos- sible by Chess’s flexible buy and build strategy. The acquired companies will continue in busi- ness taking wholesale services in future from Chess. David Pollock, the Chief
Executive at Chess, comment- ed: “2012 is set to be an exciting year for us as our acquisition list continues to grow.”
ScanSource on top form
SCANSOURCE’S third quarter 2012 sales results saw a hike of 15% over the prior year, notch- ing up net sales of $707.9m with net income at $14.8m. “Results for the quarter were
in line with our expectations, with strong performances in our North America barcode and security units offsetting weak results in our international busi- nesses,” commented Mike Baur, CEO, ScanSource.
Nick Zammit, MD at Supply,
added: “I couldn’t believe how easy Chess made the process, from making the offer, sticking to it and completing within two weeks. As a Chess wholesaler I’m eager to grow my new busi- ness, Nix Group, which I aim to sell to Chess in the future.” Richard Btesh, Director
at Chess, commented: “With the backing of Barclays Bank we’ve a significant acquisition fund left to spend. “We’re always on the look- out for new acquisitions and have the cash, experience and ability to move quickly.”
Shepperd exits Avaya
AVAYA’S UK and Ireland chan- nel chief Andrew Shepperd has left the vendor just eight months after taking over from the previ- ous UK&I MD Lee Shorten in August last year. Until a replacement MD is
found the UK region will be managed by Mario DiMascio, VP of EMEA. In a statement Avaya com-
mented, ‘Andrew has played a key role in leading, driving and progressing positive changes within the UK & Ireland sales organisation. Unfortunately, he has decided to leave Avaya and we wish him well in his future career. We have initiated a search for an MD for the UK and Ireland’.
