BYOD sparks MDM market

THE rise of the bring your own device (BYOD) phenomenon is making mobile device manage- ment (MDM) one of the hot- test markets for enterprise IT, according to Ovum. The challenge for CIOs is

how to manage and secure data while exploiting the innovation and productivity benefits that embracing the major smart- phone platforms can deliver, says the firm. Vendors from a variety of backgrounds across the IT and telecoms space are looking to grab clients in this market as it becomes a gateway to a larger enterprise managed mobility industry. However, according to analysts at Ovum, limitations of the major OS platforms are pre- venting vendors and enterprises from implementing consistent remote management and data security strategies. “Protecting the confidential-

ity, integrity, and availability of corporate information is a key concern of the IT department,” commented Richard Absalom, analyst at Ovum. “We’re seeing vendors rush to exploit the fact that most organisations do not have the required resources or expertise to simultaneously manage cor-

porate data on multiple plat- forms. The limitations and lack of available APIs on these plat- forms are often the key fac- tors stopping third party ven- dors from providing exactly the same data security features across every OS.”

Data collected by Ovum

from the MDM vendors signals that in the workplace, Apple’s iOS is the preferred platform, with 40% of the devices man- aged on MDM platforms by enterprises. Elsewhere, Android (16%) is still lagging behind BlackBerry (24%). As the momentum of BYOD

continues, the number of com- peting products and solutions are leaving enterprises confused about what they should be look- ing for, and how the products and solutions compare and dif- fer, claims Absalom. “When selecting a vendor

organisations must consider their exact requirements. There is no one solution for all. “Enterprise IT departments must develop and implement new enterprise mobility policies that accommodate the BYOD and consumerisation trends, and use MDM solutions to man- age and enforce such policies,” added Absalom.

Fresh demand for IT skills

PERMANENT IT salaries in the UK have risen by 2% over the last 12 months with the average salary for an IT profes- sional now £39,754. A study by IT Recruitment

Agency CV Screen looked at a broad spectrum of 50 IT roles and monitored over 8,000 advertised positions in the UK during the first quarter of 2012. CV Screen’s MD Matthew

Iveson said: “The last 12 months have seen more demand for IT staff and we were not surprised that salaries have crept up.”

CV Screen observed that the number of vacancies registered between Q1 2011 and Q1 2012 had stabilised. Statistics from the IT recruiter also suggest that the number of applicants per vacancy has increased by 20% with an average of 194 applica- tions per advertised vacancy. Iveson added: “The num- ber of candidates applying for vacancies has increased over the last 12 months as confi- dence has continued to return. There is now less reluctance from IT professionals to change

jobs with less fear of redun- dancy clouding their decision to progress their careers.” The outlook for the IT jobs is positive, reckons

market

Iveson. “After a couple of brief dips in IT recruitment activity in Q2 2011 we have seen a strong end to the year,” he noted. “CV Screen fully expects the market to improve in 2012 as employers continue to invest in their IT infrastructure.”
